Casper Ruud played two matches on Saturday and won them both, securing his third Geneva Open title in four years.
In the final, he defeated Tomas Machac 7-5, 6-3. Machac had previously defeated Novak Djokovic in the semifinals, then faced Ruud less than three hours later after beating Flavio Cobolli.
Ruud had a slow start in his first match against Cobolli, but he managed to turn it around and win 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4) after a rain delay.
Ranked seventh, Ruud saved a match point in the deciding set against Cobolli. In the final, he saved a set point in the first set when Machac double-faulted.
“He definitely deserved to win the first set,” Ruud said. “It was tough to find a groove. The weather has been a bit challenging this week but today was fantastic.”
Ruud is now headed to Paris for the French Open, where he reached the final in the past two years but lost to Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. The main-draw matches start on Sunday at Roland Garros.
This was Ruud’s 12th career title, with 11 of them winning on clay courts. It’s his fifth title in Switzerland and third in Geneva, having also won in 2021 and 2022.
