49ers Dominate Seahawks in Convincing Win but Highlight Areas Needing Improvement

The San Francisco 49ers demonstrated why they are considered one of the top teams in the NFL despite a 2-3 start to the season. In their Thursday night matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, the 49ers secured a convincing 36-24 victory, further establishing their dominance over their NFC West rival. While the game showcased their talent and resilience, it also highlighted areas needing improvement, particularly in maintaining a lead and special teams performance.

The 49ers set the tone early, taking control of the game in the first half. Their offense was sharp, and their defense was unrelenting, keeping the Seahawks largely at bay. George Kittle played a pivotal role in the victory, scoring two touchdowns, while Deebo Samuel added a remarkable long touchdown that showcased his explosive playmaking ability. Despite their strong start, the 49ers showed a tendency to let opponents back into games, a recurring issue this season.

Seattle’s struggles against San Francisco continued under new head coach Mike Macdonald. The Seahawks have been outmatched by the 49ers over the past few seasons, losing multiple games in uncompetitive fashion. Although the Seahawks began the game with a promising drive, it ended in disappointment as Geno Smith threw an interception deep in 49ers territory. The turnover set the stage for San Francisco to capitalize on momentum and establish an early lead.

The 49ers demonstrated their offensive prowess with a long drive starting from their own 3-yard line following the interception. While they settled for a field goal, the drive exemplified their ability to dominate in the trenches and dictate the game’s pace. Brock Purdy effectively led the offense, finishing with three touchdown passes and 255 passing yards. The team’s red zone struggles, however, prevented them from converting opportunities into more points, leaving room for Seattle to stay within reach.

Seattle clawed back into the game in the second half, aided by a dramatic 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Laviska Shenault Jr. This play shifted the momentum and trimmed San Francisco’s lead to 23-10. Shortly afterward, Kenneth Walker III added a rushing touchdown, further closing the gap to 23-17. Special teams lapses and injuries to key players like running back Jordan Mason, who was forced to leave the game early, left the 49ers vulnerable and searching for answers.

The 49ers’ defense rose to the occasion in crucial moments, with Renardo Green intercepting a poorly thrown ball from Geno Smith intended for DK Metcalf. The interception allowed San Francisco to regain control and extend their lead. Kittle’s second touchdown of the game provided a cushion, but Seattle responded with a touchdown pass from Smith to Tyler Lockett, keeping the game within reach at 29-24 with under two minutes remaining.

A pivotal moment came late in the game when Isaac Guerendo, filling in for the injured Mason, broke free for a 76-yard run that set up a game-sealing touchdown by Kyle Juszczyk. This final scoring drive ensured the 49ers would leave no room for a Seahawks comeback. Guerendo’s performance was crucial in alleviating concerns about the team’s running back depth with Christian McCaffrey still sidelined.

Defensively, the 49ers excelled in limiting Seattle’s ground game, holding them to just 52 rushing yards. San Francisco’s defensive unit showcased its physicality and ability to disrupt Seattle’s offensive rhythm. Despite allowing over 300 passing yards from Smith, they created key turnovers and delivered impactful plays, including a late-game sack by Sam Okuayinonu. The Seahawks’ inability to sustain drives and capitalize on opportunities underscored the 49ers’ defensive dominance.

Statistically, the 49ers outperformed Seattle across the board. They gained a total of 483 yards compared to Seattle’s 358, with a particularly significant advantage in rushing yards. Guerendo led the ground game with 99 rushing yards, while Kittle and Samuel were standouts in the passing attack. Seattle’s Geno Smith showed flashes of potential but was ultimately hindered by turnovers and missed opportunities.

This win bolstered the 49ers’ standing in the NFC West and reaffirmed their status as a team to beat in the conference. However, the game also revealed areas requiring attention, particularly their red zone efficiency and special teams reliability. San Francisco’s three early losses this season may complicate their pursuit of the NFC’s top playoff seed, but their performance against Seattle provided a reminder of their talent and resilience.

For Seattle, the loss highlighted ongoing struggles against their division rival and the challenges of competing at an elite level. While the Seahawks showed some fight, particularly in the second half, their inability to contain the 49ers’ offense and their own miscues ultimately sealed their fate. The defeat extended their losing streak to San Francisco, leaving them searching for solutions to reverse this trend.

The 49ers’ victory against the Seahawks showcased their strengths as a balanced and formidable team capable of imposing their will on opponents. While they are not without flaws, their performance reaffirmed their position as a serious contender in the NFC. The win also reinforced their dominance over the Seahawks, who continue to struggle in this divisional rivalry. As the season progresses, the 49ers will aim to build on this momentum while addressing areas for improvement to solidify their status as one of the league’s best teams.

Bills determined to improve after recent struggles, focus on Jets matchup

The Buffalo Bills, already heading to the playoffs, are not happy with their recent performance.

It’s been four weeks since Buffalo secured its postseason spot, but the Bills know they need to improve as they prepare to face the New York Jets on Sunday afternoon in Orchard Park, N.Y.

Buffalo (12-3) believes there’s room for improvement on both offense and defense after their game against the 3-12 Patriots last week. The Bills had most of their struggles on defense, as New England took a 14-0 lead and converted 7 of 12 third downs during the game.

Buffalo was able to pull off a 24-21 win after allowing 24 consecutive points, but Bills defensive coordinator Bobby Babich wants to make sure the Jets (4-11) don’t have an easy time extending drives.

“Certainly we’re not where we need to be or where we want to be, and we’re constantly looking to get that corrected,” Babich said about the Bills’ third-down defense. “It’s a combination of us putting our players, and me specifically, putting the players in position to be successful and understand how they’re going to get attacked.”

The Bills also want to get wide receiver Amari Cooper more involved. Since being acquired from the Cleveland Browns in October, Cooper has caught 17 passes for 241 yards and one touchdown in seven games with Buffalo. He only had one catch for 10 yards against the Patriots.

“We’re better when Amari Cooper is out on the football field,” said Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady. “I got to do a better job of getting the ball in his hands, because he helps us.”

While the Bills focus on their playoff push, the Jets are looking to end a disappointing season.

Cleveland Browns players celebrates after a touchdown

New York once had hopes of winning the AFC East, but those dreams were crushed by the Bills, who dominated the division. A 19-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams last weekend dropped the Jets to 1-5 in their last six games, but linebacker Jamien Sherwood believes finishing strong is still important.

“There are only two weeks (remaining). There is no reason for anybody to be checked out,” Sherwood said. “You have two full weeks of football left and preparation and go out there and put your best tape on the line. These final moments in seasons like this show what type of person you are and what type of player you are.”

The Jets’ remaining hopes were affected earlier this week when veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers said his future with the Jets is uncertain.

On “The Pat McAfee Show” on Monday, Rodgers joked that Jets owner Woody Johnson’s teenage sons, Brick and Jack, might cut him after the season. This followed reports that Johnson gets advice from his sons, who may not want Rodgers back in 2025.

“You should ask Woody,” Rodgers said when asked if he thought Johnson wanted to keep the 41-year-old quarterback next season.

Rodgers is dealing with a knee injury but would have practiced in full on Wednesday if the Jets had held a session. Wide receiver Davante Adams (hip), offensive linemen Morgan Moses (knee) and Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle), and cornerbacks Michael Carter II (back) and Sauce Gardner (hamstring) would have missed practice.

Buffalo also didn’t practice on Wednesday, and their injury report was an estimate. Five Bills were listed as limited, including safety Damar Hamlin (rib) and linebacker Matt Milano (biceps, groin).

Buccaneers face Panthers in hopes of securing playoff spot

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are still in the race for a playoff spot, but they cannot afford any mistakes.

The Carolina Panthers will try to eliminate another playoff hopeful when they play the Buccaneers in Tampa on Sunday afternoon.

“We understand where we are,” said Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles. “It’s great to be playing December football. We just have to take care of ourselves and look up at the end and see where we’re at.”

The Buccaneers (8-7) are tied with the Atlanta Falcons at the top of the NFC South. However, even if Tampa Bay wins all their remaining games, they might not win the division because Atlanta holds the tiebreaker after winning both games against the Buccaneers this season.

“We’re in playoff mode,” said Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield. “We’ve got to take care of business or we have no shot.”

The Panthers (4-11) ended a four-game losing streak last week by defeating Arizona 36-30 in overtime. This victory ended the Cardinals’ playoff hopes.

“It has been my hope all year to build a brand of football that we’re proud of,” said first-year Panthers coach Dave Canales.

Now Canales has the chance to stop his former team. He was Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator before taking the job with the Panthers.

The Buccaneers won the first meeting with the Panthers this season, 26-23 in overtime on Dec. 1 in Charlotte. Carolina took the lead with 30 seconds left, but a 51-yard field goal by Chase McLaughlin sent the game to overtime, where McLaughlin made a 30-yard kick to win the game.

Mayfield passed for 235 yards in that game, while Carolina’s Bryce Young threw for 298 yards.

Carolina Panthers celebrates in the 1st half

The Buccaneers lost to Dallas 26-24 last weekend, ending a four-game winning streak. That winning streak included three big victories. Mayfield passed for 303 yards in the game against the Cowboys, his highest total in a seven-game stretch.

For the Panthers, six of their last seven games have been decided by six points or fewer, with three of those games going into overtime.

“We’ve got to make sure that our bodies are right for this weekend, especially going down to Tampa, where it’s going to be a little warmer,” said Canales.

In the win over Arizona, Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard ran for 152 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime. He now has 1,195 rushing yards for the season.

“Just the example of consistency, of hard work, Panthers football, our style, all that stuff, personified,” Canales said. “I know if Chuba was up here, he’d be giving all the love to the big boys up front.”

In the first game against Tampa Bay, Hubbard only managed 43 yards on 12 carries.

The Panthers changed their practice schedule this week. Offensive tackle Taylor Moton (knee) and cornerback Jaycee Horn (hip) were both dealing with injuries and missed practice early in the week.

The Panthers are also monitoring the status of rookie receiver Xavier Legette (hip/wrist), who missed the Arizona game but hopes to play again before the season ends. Canales said Legette was moving well earlier in the week, and the receiver participated fully in Wednesday’s practice, which is a good sign for the team.

The Buccaneers might have safety Jordan Whitehead (pectoral muscle) back on Sunday after spending time on injured reserve.

Tampa Bay will finish the season next week at home against New Orleans, while the Panthers will end their season by playing at Atlanta, which could affect the divisional standings.

Dolphins releasing linebacker Shaq Barrett from the reserve/retired list

The Miami Dolphins are waiving two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Shaquil Barrett from the reserve/retired list, his agent confirmed to ESPN on Thursday.

Barrett, 32, could return to play this season if he clears waivers and signs with another team. However, if another team claims him, he would not be able to play for the rest of the season.

“We appreciate the Dolphins giving Shaq this opportunity to continue his career in the NFL,” said Drew Rosenhaus, Barrett’s agent. “Hopefully, he will pass through waivers and become a free agent so he can play again this season. He is in great shape and would be ready to play immediately.”

Shaq Barrett (NFL)

Barrett announced his retirement in July, four months after signing a one-year, $9 million contract with the Dolphins. He had a change of heart and requested reinstatement on November 26, but the Dolphins did not approve the request.

Undrafted from Colorado State in 2014, Barrett has played 131 games (85 starts) over nine seasons with the Denver Broncos (2014-18) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2019-23). He won Super Bowls with both teams and recorded 400 tackles (73 for loss), 59 sacks, 22 forced fumbles, and three interceptions.

His best season came in 2019 with the Buccaneers when he led the NFL with 19.5 sacks and earned his first Pro Bowl selection. He also made the Pro Bowl in 2021 after recording 10 sacks.

Eagles Aim for NFC East Title and No. 2 Seed as NFC Playoff Race Heats Up

The Eagles’ playoff situation heading into their Week 16 game against the Washington Commanders is clear for the NFC East and No. 2 seed in the playoffs. A victory would secure both the NFC East title and the No. 2 playoff seed for Philadelphia. However, the race for the NFC’s No. 1 playoff seed remains complicated. The Eagles, along with the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings, are tied with a 12-2 record. However, the Eagles would lose tiebreakers against both teams: the Lions would have a better conference record, and the Vikings would likely edge out Philly due to a stronger strength of victory. Thus, the Eagles must finish the season with at least one more win than either Detroit or Minnesota to have a realistic shot at the top playoff seed.

The good news for the Eagles is that Detroit and Minnesota will face off in Week 18, which guarantees one of those teams will suffer a loss. Detroit plays the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers in the next two weeks, while Minnesota faces the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers. For the Eagles to take the No. 1 spot, they will need to win their final games and hope that Detroit or Minnesota falters.

In the NFC East standings, the Washington Commanders still have an outside chance of overtaking the Eagles for the division title. To do so, the Commanders would need to beat the Eagles and then win their final two games against the Atlanta Falcons and Dallas Cowboys. Additionally, they would require the Eagles to lose their final two games. If the Commanders win, they could also secure a playoff spot if the Falcons lose and either the Los Angeles Rams or Seattle Seahawks also lose.

Dallas still has an unlikely shot at the playoffs, but it would need to win its final three games, including a victory over the Eagles, while hoping that the Commanders lose out. A loss by either the Cowboys or the Eagles would eliminate Dallas from playoff contention. As a result, the Eagles’ game against Washington will have major implications for both teams, as well as the playoff race for Dallas.

The rest of the NFC playoff picture is also tightening up. The Lions are in control of the NFC’s top seed for now but could fall as low as the No. 7 seed if they lose all three of their remaining games. The Packers need a win against the Saints and some help to clinch a playoff berth. Meanwhile, the 49ers have a slim chance of making the playoffs after a disappointing season following their Super Bowl appearance.

NFC Playoff Picture Summary

Team Record Status Key Notes
Eagles 12-2 Clinch NFC East & No. 2 Seed Must win to secure NFC East and No. 2 seed, need to outperform Lions/Vikings
Lions 12-2 Current No. 1 Seed Must avoid losing all final games, including Week 18 against the Vikings
Vikings 12-2 In the hunt for No. 1 Seed Could edge out Eagles with better strength of victory
Commanders 9-5 Outside chance to win NFC East Must win against Eagles, Falcons, and Cowboys, plus Eagles losses
Cowboys 6-8 Elimination possible Must win all 3 games and hope for Commanders’ losses to stay alive
Packers 10-4 Possible Playoff Berth Needs a win against the Saints and some help (Falcons, Rams, or Seahawks losses)
49ers 6-8 Slim chance of making playoffs Needs a strong finish, likely missing playoffs after the Super Bowl loss

Mac Jones Takes Responsibility for Patriots’ Loss to Commanders Amid Growing Scrutiny

Mac Jones, the New England Patriots’ quarterback, became the focal point of criticism following the team’s 20-17 loss to the Washington Commanders. His late-game interception, which came while attempting to connect with JuJu Smith-Schuster, sealed the defeat and was a key moment in the loss. Jones’ pass slipped through Smith-Schuster’s hands, landing in the arms of Commanders’ defender Jartavius Martin. Despite the mistake, Jones took full responsibility for the loss, acknowledging that there were no excuses for his performance.

In the aftermath, Jones reiterated his commitment to the team and its standards. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the outcome, stressing the need for both himself and the team to execute better. While the interception was the final blow, Jones remained focused on the bigger picture, recognizing that every player, including himself, must continuously strive to improve and meet the expectations of the franchise.

Mac Jones Takes Responsibility for Patriots' Loss to Commanders Amid Growing Scrutiny

Despite the interception, Jones was not the sole problem in the game. New England’s struggles were exacerbated by issues on defense and special teams, which left the offense starting each drive from its own 25-yard line or worse in the second half. Jones did his best with the limited opportunities he had, including a strong throw to Jalen Reagor late in the third quarter that could have set the team up for a scoring chance, only for Reagor to drop the pass. This was one of several missed opportunities for the Patriots during the game.

Jones also recognized his own shortcomings, admitting that he missed several open targets throughout the game. Despite the mounting pressure and the mounting scrutiny of his role as the Patriots’ quarterback, he remained steadfast in his approach. He stressed the importance of maintaining confidence and putting in the necessary work, regardless of the results. Jones’ resilience is notable, as he committed to continuously improving, with no regrets about his effort.

As the Patriots’ season continues to spiral, Jones is left with eight more games to prove whether he can be the long-term solution at quarterback. His future in New England remains uncertain, with his performance being scrutinized as the team struggles to find success. In the face of adversity, Jones is determined to keep working hard, hoping that his efforts will eventually lead to better results for both himself and the Patriots.

Lakers center Anthony Davis leaves Christmas Day game due to a sprained left ankle

LeBron James and the Lakers stepped up again when star player Anthony Davis went down.

Davis didn’t return to the game against Golden State on Wednesday night after injuring his left ankle midway through the first quarter.

“It’s always difficult to play without AD, so I guess our job is even more heightened, we have to do a little bit more,” James said after the Lakers won 115-113. “Everyone has to chip in, especially on the defensive end because AD is our anchor.

I thought guys did a great job of just playing off one another, getting to where we wanted to get to offensively and also being able to buckle down and get timely stops versus a really good offensive team.”

Davis rolled his ankle while moving toward the Lakers’ basket, leaving with 4:48 left in the quarter. He went to the locker room and was listed as questionable to return.

“I don’t have an update on AD,” coach JJ Redick said.

Davis, who stands 6-foot-10, had already been questionable to play in the Christmas Day game against Stephen Curry and the Warriors due to a bruised left shoulder.

He missed all three of his shots, scoring no points and grabbing two rebounds in seven minutes of play.

Austin Reaves stepped up to help with the workload, recording a triple-double with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. He also made the game-winning layup with one second remaining.

“It got to a hand that we trust,” James said. “The play was drawn up for me, they doubled me at the top of the key. It’s always great to have great options out on the floor at the same time. AR’s been in that position before.”

Beyoncé’s performance stole the spotlight during Netflix’s first NFL broadcast

Beyoncé brought more excitement than either of the games during Netflix’s NFL debut on Christmas Day.

She made her halftime appearance riding a white horse and thrilled the Houston crowd with a nearly 13-minute performance. During the show, she surprised fans by bringing out Shaboozey to perform “Sweet Honey Buckiin” and Post Malone to sing “Levii’s Jeans.”

The games on the field didn’t meet expectations, even though the NFL featured four of the top five teams in the AFC.

In the first game, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce took advantage of Pittsburgh’s defense in Kansas City’s 29-10 win.

The broadcast went smoothly and became the second-most popular live title on Netflix, according to NFL Media.

Lamar Jackson and the Ravens were leading 17-2 at halftime against C.J. Stroud and the Texans before Beyoncé stole the spotlight. Baltimore finished the game with a 31-2 win, with Jackson resting for most of the fourth quarter.

Mariah Carey started the football doubleheader with a pre-recorded performance of “All I Want for Christmas is You,” and then the two-time Super Bowl champion Chiefs defeated the Steelers to secure the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

There were no major streaming issues during the game, despite Netflix experiencing minor problems at the start of the pregame show. The broadcast began with about 10 seconds of silence because studio host Kay Adams’ microphone wasn’t on.

Beyoncé’s live performance at NRG Stadium was a big test for the streaming service, and it appeared to go perfectly.

Travis Kelce runs in the 1st half

Mahomes threw for 320 yards and three touchdowns, while Kelce caught eight passes for 84 yards and one touchdown as the Chiefs (15-1) earned a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. The Steelers (10-6) have now lost three straight and might have to settle for a wild-card spot.

Jackson threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score, while Derrick Henry rushed for 147 yards and one touchdown to help the Ravens (11-5) take first place in the AFC North, one game ahead of Pittsburgh.

Netflix signed a three-year contract in May to broadcast Christmas Day games. The NFL is expected to give the streaming service one of its biggest days since the site launched in 1998.

With Netflix’s 282.3 million subscribers in more than 190 countries, this was the first time an NFL game was available globally on one platform. The games were available in five languages: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and German.

Netflix had some issues streaming the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul fight on Nov. 14, with 65 million peak concurrent streams. Almost 85,000 viewers reported problems with outages or streaming issues during the fight.

However, there were fewer complaints on Wednesday.

According to NFL Media, viewers from all 50 states tuned in within minutes of the pregame show starting, and viewers from nearly 200 countries watched the first game. Before the Ravens-Texans game began, Netflix reported surpassing its peak concurrent viewers for any Christmas in the past four years.

This was the NFL’s first Wednesday game since Dec. 2, 2020, when the Steelers and Ravens played due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The only other time the league played on a Wednesday since 1948 was in 2012 when the Giants and Cowboys met in the season opener.

Rangers Set Franchise Record in Shootout Victory Over Islanders, Strengthen Division Lead

The New York Rangers secured a crucial 3-2 shootout win over the New York Islanders on Saturday, edging three points ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes in the Metropolitan Division. The victory, fueled by a game-winning goal from Vincent Trocheck, also set a franchise record with 54 regular-season wins. Igor Shesterkin played a pivotal role with 34 saves in regulation and two more in the shootout, outdueling Islanders’ goalie Ilya Sorokin. Despite the loss, the Islanders earned a valuable point, further solidifying their playoff hopes.

While the Rangers celebrated the win, the Islanders remained optimistic, knowing their playoff chances were still strong despite their six-game win streak being broken. Going into the evening, the Islanders could have clinched a playoff spot if Detroit and Washington lost. While both teams won, the Islanders’ postseason berth seemed inevitable unless a remarkable series of events occurred. Ryan Pulock acknowledged the importance of securing a point in a game that had the intensity of playoff hockey.

Rangers Set Franchise Record in Shootout Victory Over Islanders, Strengthen Division Lead
Rangers Set Franchise Record in Shootout Victory Over Islanders, Strengthen Division Lead

The Rangers had to fight back after a rough second period, where they lost the lead and struggled to generate offense. Their usual resilience came to the forefront in the third period. The Islanders had a golden opportunity to increase their lead when Artemi Panarin took down Adam Pelech on a breakaway, leading to a penalty shot. Shesterkin’s glove save preserved the 2-1 scoreline and set the stage for the Rangers’ comeback.

Panarin later tied the game with a wrist shot, following Shesterkin’s crucial saves. The game continued into a thrilling overtime period, where both teams traded chances, including a dramatic save by Shesterkin on Mathew Barzal. In the shootout, Shesterkin denied Kyle Palmieri and Brock Nelson, while Panarin and Trocheck scored for the Rangers, securing the win. This marked a significant bounce-back performance after their loss to the Islanders earlier in the week.

For the Islanders, their inability to capitalize on power plays was a key factor in their defeat. They allowed a shorthanded goal to Braden Schneider during an extended five-on-four power play in the second period. Although they regained the lead thanks to two goals from Brock Nelson, the Islanders’ inability to threaten on the power play ultimately cost them the game. With Noah Dobson’s injury and their six-game win streak broken, the Islanders must avoid chaos to secure a playoff spot. Meanwhile, the Rangers’ victory restored their momentum as they head into the final game of the regular season with confidence.

Mahomes tosses 3 touchdowns as Chiefs secure the AFC’s top seed with a dominant 29-10 win over Steelers

Andy Reid wore a Santa Claus suit in a happy Kansas City Chiefs locker room on Christmas Day, and then gave his team a gift that they have earned: home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.

How Reid managed to get into the costume so quickly after Kansas City’s solid 29-10 win over the struggling Pittsburgh Steelers to secure the top seed in the AFC for the fourth time in seven years remains unclear (though he hinted that an elf may have helped).

However, how Reid’s team continues to pull away from the competition year after year is clear.

A lot of Patrick Mahomes. A little bit of Travis Kelce. Some speed. A defense that quietly handles its work, even when its leader is sitting on the sideline in sweatpants.

Yes, it has been difficult at times — by Kansas City’s high standards — as they chase a third straight championship. But as the playoffs approach, the team that seemed vulnerable for much of the season now seems to be finding its rhythm.

And once again, the road to the Super Bowl will go through Arrowhead Stadium, just the way the Chiefs like it.

“Getting the No. 1 seed is important,” Mahomes said after throwing for 320 yards and three touchdowns. “It’s like winning a playoff game.”

Russell Wilson passes in the 1st half

Even though the way the Chiefs secured it didn’t quite feel like a playoff game.

Kansas City (15-1) spent three hours playing with the Steelers (10-6), like a cat batting at leftover wrapping paper. The Chiefs jumped to an early 13-point lead and Pittsburgh never really posed a serious threat, which has now lost three straight games, further damaging its chance to win the AFC North.

“That sucked, to be blunt,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said.

It usually does when Pittsburgh faces Mahomes. Mahomes is now 4-0 against the Steelers with 17 touchdowns and just one interception. He threw first-half touchdown passes to Xavier Worthy and Justin Watson and capped it off with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Kelce in the fourth quarter.

That touchdown was Kelce’s 77th career scoring catch, breaking a franchise record set by Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez. Kelce celebrated by dunking the ball over the goal post, copying Gonzalez’s signature move. The act earned him a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, but it didn’t matter. Harrison Butker kicked a longer extra point, and the Chiefs were comfortably in charge.

“It’s just showing Tony some love,” Kelce said with a laugh, on the day he joined Gonzalez and Jason Witten as the only tight ends to reach 1,000 career receptions. Kelce finished with eight catches for 84 yards, playing for an offense that is beginning to regain its confidence.

The defense also performed well, even with five-time Pro Bowl defensive end Chris Jones out due to a calf injury. Jones’ teammates hardly looked worn out, despite playing for the third time in 11 days.

“It was tough,” cornerback Trent McDuffie said. “I mean, three games in 11 days is crazy for anybody. But I thought we handled it very well.”

The Steelers didn’t handle it well. Pittsburgh lost all three games in this stretch, facing Super Bowl contenders Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Kansas City, and looked outmatched in each one.

Travis Kelce runs in the 1st half

Perhaps the most concerning part for Pittsburgh is how these games played out. They lost each by at least 14 points and could end up starting the postseason on the road after losing a division lead they held just three weeks ago.

“I think that there’s highs and lows in every season,” Pittsburgh quarterback Russell Wilson said after throwing for 205 yards with an ill-timed interception in the first quarter. “We’ve got to make sure that we end this last game on the right footing and right belief.”

That’s never been a problem for Kansas City. Not with Mahomes leading the way. He completed 29 passes to eight different players, including a career-high eight to Worthy and four to Hollywood Brown, whose return from injury has added another playmaker to the Chiefs’ growing list of weapons.

“We’re playing, especially offensively, our best football of the year,” Mahomes said.

It certainly looks that way. The two-time MVP appeared unaffected by the ankle injury he suffered against Cleveland, throwing touchdowns on Kansas City’s first two drives. And while the Steelers got within 13-7 and 16-10, they never had the ball with a chance to take the lead in the second half.

Instead, the Chiefs, who had struggled to pull away in the first three months of the season, surged to secure the No. 1 seed and several weeks of rest before their pursuit of a three-peat, which now seems very possible.

The Steelers are heading into the New Year on a three-game losing streak following a heavy defeat to the Chiefs

In just 11 days, the Pittsburgh Steelers faced three teams aiming for the Super Bowl, and it’s clear they have struggled to prove they belong with that elite group.

For the third time in those 11 days, the Steelers did the little things wrong—and some big things too—leading to a big loss, this time a 29-10 defeat to Kansas City on Christmas Day. It was a clear reminder of the difference between the two teams, who are heading in opposite directions.

The Chiefs, who have faced some struggles this season while chasing a third straight championship, scored twice early, forced two key turnovers, had five sacks, and sealed the game when they got the chance.

The Steelers (10-6), according to Coach Mike Tomlin, spent the entire game “running on the beach.” Their defense couldn’t stop Patrick Mahomes, and their offense couldn’t protect Russell Wilson or find any rhythm, even with George Pickens back in the lineup after missing three games due to a hamstring injury.

This loss felt all too familiar for Pittsburgh. After another disappointing performance, they left the field looking for answers—answers they may not find soon enough to make a serious playoff run.

“We just need to continue to find ways to get better,” Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt said. “As the season goes on, the margins are smaller.”

Mike Tomlin walks the sidelines in the 1st half

Right now, those margins are too small for Pittsburgh to get by without being at their best. During this three-game losing streak, their chance at the AFC North title has slipped away each week.

Against a Kansas City team that appears to be improving, Pittsburgh has lost the identity they built during the first three months of the season.

They failed to produce any turnovers, and Wilson threw an interception trying to force a pass into triple coverage in the end zone. Watt and the rest of the defense didn’t sack Mahomes once.

“You can’t afford to spot them points and allow them to scramble around in the pocket and have time,” Watt said. “We didn’t have any success.”

The Steelers are running out of time to regain their confidence as they’ve already locked in a playoff spot. But the optimism of making a playoff run for the first time since 2016 has faded as they’ve been outscored by an average of 16 points in their last three games.

“The bottom line is the junior varsity is not good enough, we’ve got to own that,” Tomlin said. Pittsburgh will have some time to rest before they host Cincinnati for the season finale. How they respond in the next 10 days is crucial.

“Our belief can’t waver,” Wilson said. “If anything, we’ve got to turn it up even more on our belief.”

That’s true, but it would also help if they could stop making the same mistakes, which have haunted them during one of the toughest stretches of Tomlin’s long coaching career.

A sequence late in the first quarter summed up how things have gone for Pittsburgh since their win over Cleveland on Dec. 8, which had pushed them to a 10-3 record and kept their hopes for the AFC’s top seed alive.

Pittsburgh was down 13-0 but managed to get going on a 69-yard drive in just three plays. Jaylen Warren appeared to finish the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run, but a holding penalty on tight end Darnell Washington wiped it off the board.

Justin Reid celebrates his interception in the 1st half

On the next play, Wilson tried to pass into triple coverage to tight end Pat Freiermuth. Kansas City’s Justin Reid easily intercepted the ball.

“It’s on me,” Wilson said. “I was trying to give Pat a chance. He’s done a good job for us down in the red zone and they made a good play.”

Although the Steelers got within 13-7 at halftime, the defense gave up points quickly after the break. Kansas City scored on its first three possessions in the second half, including two touchdowns in less than two minutes at the start of the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

The Chiefs celebrated in the locker room with Santa suits after clinching home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs, while the Steelers walked off with their hopes of winning the AFC North fading fast. Their season, which once had so much promise, seems headed toward another early playoff exit.

“The bottom line is we’re just not performing well enough,” Tomlin said. “I’m less concerned about the control of the division and more concerned about the quality of our performance at this juncture.”

The second matchup between Patrick Surtain and Ja’Marr Chase takes center stage in the Broncos-Bengals

If anyone can slow down Cincinnati Bengals receiver Ja’Marr Chase, it’s Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II.

Surtain did it before in 2021 when both were rookies. In that game, Surtain limited Chase to just one catch for 3 yards on four targets, while Joe Burrow threw for only 157 yards.

“That was early in my career. Rookie year? Yeah, it was a good game,” Surtain said. “They came in with a high-striking offense and we knew that we had to eliminate the explosives, eliminate their top threat. Ja’Marr, he’s a great player, one of, if not the best, receivers in the league.”

This weekend, Surtain and the Denver defense will get some help with the expected return of second-year cornerback Riley Moss, who has been out for a month with a sprained MCL.

Moss’s return would allow defensive coordinator Vance Joseph to switch back to mostly man coverage instead of zone coverage. This way, Surtain could focus on defending Chase (108 catches for 1,510 yards and 16 touchdowns), while Moss would cover Tee Higgins (58 receptions for 727 yards and seven touchdowns).

“They got a lot going on with themselves on the offensive side of the ball, so it’s gonna be a good challenge,” Surtain said. “Trying to eliminate them like how we did that time would be great.”

Slowing down Chase could be crucial for the Broncos (9-6) to eliminate the Bengals (7-8) from playoff contention. Cincinnati needs a win to stay in the race, while the Broncos can clinch their first playoff spot since 2015 with a win or tie on Saturday.

Back in 2021, both the Bengals and Broncos were 7-6 when Surtain and Chase faced off for the first time. Despite Chase having his worst statistical game of his career, the Bengals won 15-10 in Denver and went on to make a Super Bowl run.

The Broncos lost their last three games that season, finishing with a 7-10 record, which marked the end of seven straight losing seasons. They broke that streak this year.

The Broncos missed a chance to clinch a playoff spot last Thursday after blowing a double-digit second-half lead in a 34-27 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Although coach Sean Payton had written “Run It!!” in large letters on his play sheet, he only called 14 run plays after the Broncos drove down the field for a touchdown on their opening drive, with four running backs combining for seven carries and 43 yards, capped by Audric Estime’s 3-yard touchdown.

With rain expected on Sunday, the Broncos are likely to run the ball more, as they face Chase and Burrow on the other side.
