Dylan Cease had a strong game, striking out 12 batters and teaming up with two relievers to limit the Chicago Cubs to just one hit. The San Diego Padres secured a 3-0 victory on Wednesday.
Cease, who returned to Chicago after being traded to San Diego in March, pitched seven innings. He only allowed one hit, which came from Yan Gomes’ comebacker that deflected off Cease and was fielded by second baseman Xander Bogaerts, whose throw to first was just a tad late.
Cease, now with a record of 5-2, walked two batters and hit one, but, he pitched well with a 2.19 ERA in eight starts. He felt this was one of his best performances, citing improved command of his pitches compared to last season.
Wandy Peralta and Robert Suarez also played crucial roles in securing the win, with Suarez earning his 12th save of the season.
Luis Arraez’s contributions were also noteworthy, as he singled twice and scored twice, helping the Padres win for the sixth time in eight games. Manager Mike Shildt praised Arraez’s batting skills, emphasizing his ability to make solid contact with the ball, regardless of its location.
