A day following a decisive defeat by the Las Vegas Raiders, the Los Angeles Chargers have officially parted ways with head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco.
The Chargers suffered a significant setback on Thursday night in Las Vegas, succumbing to a 63-21 defeat, with Los Angeles trailing 42-0 at halftime. This marked a franchise record for points scored by the Raiders and a franchise low for points allowed by the Chargers, as reported by NFL.com.
Chargers owner Dean Spanos expressed his gratitude for the hard work, dedication, and professionalism of Staley and Telesco in a statement released on Friday. Spanos acknowledged the difficulty of such decisions, emphasizing the impact on various individuals, and stated, “We are clearly not where we need to be, however, and we need a new vision. Doing nothing in the name of continuity was not a risk I was willing to take.”
The team announced that an interim head coach and general manager will be named shortly.
Thursday’s defeat added to the string of challenges the Chargers have faced throughout the season. Following the game, when asked about his future as the head coach, Staley, who assumed the role in 2021, expressed uncertainty, stating, “I don’t know that.” Despite the disappointing outcome, he took “full responsibility” for the result and asserted that he believed he deserved to retain his position.
With a current record of 5-9, the Chargers find themselves at the bottom of the AFC West with three games remaining in the regular season.
