Chelsea has entered the fray alongside Manchester United in the pursuit of promising Italian defender Giorgio Scalvini from Serie A outfit Atalanta, according to reports from Fichajes.
The 20-year-old talent emerged from Atalanta’s youth ranks and made his breakthrough into the senior squad during the 2021-22 campaign. Since then, he has amassed an impressive tally of 80 appearances over two and a half seasons.
Scalvini’s contributions this season include ten clean sheets in 25 outings across all competitions, a factor instrumental in Atalanta’s ascent to fourth place in the Serie A standings and progression to the Europa League Round of 16.
Manchester United, having inquired about his availability, was advised that a bid of around €60 million could sway Atalanta’s decision.
With the potential departures of key defenders Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane looming at the end of the season, Manchester United may view Scalvini as a viable long-term defensive solution.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s recent defensive acquisitions, such as Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi, have yet to fully prove their worth, while Wesley Fofana has been sidelined with a prolonged injury since his arrival. Although Thiago Silva has impressed, his advancing years suggest a need for succession planning.
Both clubs are likely to intensify their pursuit of top-tier central defenders in the upcoming transfer window. Given Scalvini’s caliber, the race for his signature could extend into the summer transfer window.
