American triathlon sensation Chelsea Sodaro is poised to extend her impressive start to the season next month as she gears up for the renowned IRONMAN New Zealand event.
Ranked #11 in the PTO World rankings, Sodaro, who recently clinched her first victory since 2022 at IRONMAN 70.3 Tasmania, has been stationed in Australia since the beginning of the season.
Following a second-place finish at the Tauranga Half and her triumph in Tasmania, Sodaro is now eyeing a third consecutive podium finish as she prepares to tackle the full-distance race for the first time in 2024.
“This marks a fantastic kickoff to my full-distance season,” remarked Sodaro in anticipation of the upcoming race. She expressed her excitement to maintain the momentum gained from an intensive training camp in New Zealand, under the guidance of her coach, Dr. Dan Plews.
“I’m really thrilled. I’ve come to New Zealand for an extensive camp with my coach Dan Plews. He’s been advocating for this trip for about three or four years now, and I believe it will set the stage for a stellar start to my full-distance season,” she added.
Sodaro emphasized her eagerness to relish the early part of the year and acquire valuable experience in diverse race tactics and dynamics. She views the upcoming event as an opportunity to hone her skills amidst a highly competitive field.
Reflecting on her decision to participate in the IRONMAN New Zealand, Sodaro underscored the inspiring community spirit surrounding the event scheduled for March 2.
“What truly inspires me about IRONMAN racing is the sense of community. When a race has endured for such a significant period, it’s the collective support of the participants and supporters that truly make it exceptional. I’m eagerly looking forward to being a part of that,” she remarked.
Sodaro, who navigated through a tumultuous season last year, expressed her delight at being able to compete frequently this season. Emphasizing her penchant for challenging herself against elite competitors, she highlighted the role of tough competition in pushing her to excel.
“I thrive on competing against the best. Racing against top-notch athletes brings out the best in me. Every race I enter, my aim is to emerge victorious, and it holds greater significance when competing against exceptional athletes,” she stated.
Renowned for her meticulous preparation, Sodaro emphasized her attention to detail and strategic approach to course-specific training. The upcoming training camp and race are expected to offer valuable insights into the potential dynamics of the upcoming 70.3 Worlds.
The IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, slated for December and set to take place in Taupo, presents Sodaro with the opportunity to contest her second-ever middle-distance world championship, following her fourth-place finish back in 209.
