Chicago Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson was not in the starting lineup for the game against the Arizona Cardinals after a mistake he made last week.

Although he was dressed for the game on Sunday, Terell Smith took his place as the starting right cornerback.

Stevenson apologized after he turned his back and gestured to the crowd with just 2 seconds left in the game when the Washington Commanders snapped the ball for a Hail Mary, which led to their 18-15 victory.

Bears coach Matt Eberflus mentioned that Stevenson was supposed to box out Commanders’ receiver Noah Brown, but he arrived late, allowing Brown to catch the tipped ball for the winning 52-yard touchdown.

On Monday, Stevenson spoke to the team on his own, acknowledging that he let them down. However, he reportedly left practice early on Wednesday when he found out he wouldn’t be starting against the Cardinals.

Eberflus stated that any discipline for Stevenson would be handled internally.
