Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Nick Gordon each drove in two runs, Jesús Sánchez hit a home run, and Kyle Tyler, along with four relievers, shut down Baltimore after the third inning to help the Miami Marlins secure a 6-3 victory on Tuesday night.
Baltimore, now tied with Cleveland for the best record in the American League at 60-40, faced setbacks when second baseman Jorge Mateo and starting pitcher Albert Suárez exited the game due to injuries in the third inning.
Mateo left the game due to left elbow pain after colliding with shortstop Gunnar Henderson while diving for a ground ball hit by Sánchez behind second base. Mateo is scheduled for an MRI on Wednesday. Suárez’s outing ended when he was hit by a comebacker off the bat of Otto López, causing a contusion on his right shin.
Chisholm’s performance included a two-run double in the second inning, part of a four-run surge that gave Miami a 4-1 lead. Sánchez started the scoring with a 429-foot home run, his 12th of the season, and Gordon contributed with an RBI single.
“Everyone was feeling confident before the game, and we knew we could have a strong series against the Orioles,” Chisholm commented.
Chisholm also showcased his defensive skills, making a throw from center field to catch Colton Cowser at third base after he attempted to advance from first on Ryan Mountcastle’s single in the third inning.
“We emphasized before the game not to make mistakes on the bases and give away outs,” Marlins manager Skip Schumaker noted. “Playing smart baseball was crucial against a team like them, and I think we executed that well.”
Josh Bell and Otto López both contributed with two singles each for the Marlins, who currently hold the worst record in the National League at 36-65.
Tyler, recently called up from Triple-A, struck out five batters and allowed three earned runs over 4 2/3 innings. A.J. Puk (4-8) pitched two flawless innings in relief to earn the win, while Tanner Scott closed the game with a scoreless ninth inning for his 17th save.
