Jazz Chisholm Jr. broke a tie in the seventh inning with a two-run double, leading the Miami Marlins to a 6-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night.
The decisive play started with Xavier Edwards hitting a leadoff single against reliever Jacob Webb (1-5). Cionel Pérez then walked Nick Gordon, setting the stage for Ali Sánchez’s sacrifice bunt to advance both runners.
Chisholm followed with a high bouncer over third baseman Ramon Urías, putting the Marlins ahead 5-3. Bryan De La Cruz capped the inning with an RBI single.
Josh Bell contributed with a home run, and Edwards had a strong game with three hits and a walk for the Marlins, who currently have the worst record in the NL at 37-65. They have now won four of their last six games since the All-Star break, including the first two games of a three-game series against the AL East-leading Orioles (60-41).
“We had some great at-bats tonight,” Edwards remarked. “We were disciplined and made good contact. It’s enjoyable coming to the ballpark with this team. We’re playing well right now.”
Edwards has recorded eight multi-hit games and has maintained a .381 batting average since being called up from Triple-A Jacksonville on July 2.
Andrew Nardi (2-1) pitched a perfect seventh inning for the win, while Calvin Faucher secured three outs in the eighth. Tanner Scott closed the game, earning his 18th save of the season.
“That’s one of the toughest teams we’ve faced all year,” said Marlins manager Skip Schumaker. “To not only compete with them over the last two games but also come away with two wins speaks volumes about this group. They’re moving in the right direction, playing the game the right way.”
Colton Cowser’s three-run double off Marlins reliever Huascar Brazoban in the sixth inning tied the game at 3-3. Brazoban entered the game with the bases loaded after starter Edward Cabrera allowed singles to Anthony Santander and Ryan O’Hearn, followed by a walk to Heston Kjerstad.
