Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman has offered some valuable advice to Conor McGregor in light of McGregor’s recent leg injury.
Weidman, who himself suffered a severe leg break during a fight against Uriah Hall in April 2021, believes McGregor could benefit from his experience in recovering from such an injury.
Just three months after Weidman’s injury, McGregor faced Dustin Poirier in their trilogy bout and fractured his tibia and fibula. While Weidman has returned to the Octagon for two fights since his injury, including a controversial win over Bruno Silva, McGregor has not fought since July 2021.
Now, Weidman is sharing insights to aid McGregor on his comeback journey.
In an interview with MMAFighting.com, Weidman highlighted the psychological challenges of returning to fighting after a traumatic leg injury.
“I know he watched my fight,” Weidman remarked regarding McGregor. “I think he probably learned a lot watching my fight. Some of the red flags of what to be prepared for, for whoever he fights, and also maybe you’re not going to be able to throw [the kicks] back as much as you want. Or now, be prepared that could be something you have to deal with, so really train on kicking back.”
He emphasized the importance of making kicking second nature again, given the psychological impact of such an injury. Weidman reflected on his own experience, admitting that despite thinking he was prepared, he still struggled with it. He suggested McGregor could learn from observing his last fight.
McGregor has expressed intentions to return to fighting this summer, with Michael Chandler also expressing interest in facing him in the future.
