Christian Walker smashes a two-run homer, and Brandon Pfaadt delivers a strong five-inning performance as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeat the Colorado Rockies 5-1 on Sunday.
The D-backs emerge victorious in three out of four games in the opening series for both teams. Arizona shows dominance throughout the weekend, outscoring Colorado 32-14.
“We executed the little things well,” says D-backs manager Torey Lovullo. “They were more significant than the areas where we need improvement.”
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. contributes with an RBI single, while Walker’s homer extends the Diamondbacks’ lead to 3-0 in the first inning. Gurriel continues his impressive start to the season, tallying three homers, two doubles, and 10 RBIs over four games.
Arizona adds two more runs in the fifth inning, capitalizing on a costly mistake by Colorado’s Nolan Jones, resulting in two unearned runs. Jones’ dropped fly ball allows Tucker Barnhart to score, followed by Marte scoring on Gurriel’s double.
“Pfaadt’s performance was crucial,” states Lovullo. “Getting an early lead was key for us, and then our pitchers did their job.”
Pfaadt, known for his postseason heroics last year, carries his success into Sunday’s game. Despite a shaky rookie year in 2023, Pfaadt shines with a 3.27 ERA in 22 innings during October, providing stability as the team’s third starting pitcher.
The D-backs offense sets the tone with a three-run first inning, a pattern seen throughout the series. “It was important to get ahead early,” adds Pfaadt. “Then, as pitchers, we executed our roles.”
Feltner for the Rockies rebounds after a rough start, allowing three earned runs and five hits in five innings. Despite the loss, Feltner remains positive about his performance, focusing on maintaining aggressiveness on the mound. The Rockies struggle defensively, committing three errors, while Jacob Stallings records two hits and the team’s lone RBI.
