Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz made history on Wednesday night by stealing his major league-leading 60th base of the season, joining a rare group of players. He became the fifth player since 1901 to hit at least 20 home runs and steal 60 bases in a single season.
De La Cruz stole third base in the fifth inning and later scored the tying run in a game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Last season, Atlanta’s Ronald Acuña Jr. also reached the 20-home run and 60-stolen base milestone. He hit 41 home runs and stole 73 bases, joining Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson, who achieved this feat in 1990, 1986, and 1985.
De La Cruz is the third player from the Reds to join this exclusive group. Former Reds star Eric Davis accomplished it in 1986 with 27 home runs and 80 stolen bases.
Joe Morgan, a Reds great and Hall of Famer, was the first to reach this milestone in 1973 with 26 home runs and 67 stolen bases, and again in 1976 with 27 home runs and 60 stolen bases.
