Spain coach Luis de la Fuente expressed his respect for Brahim Díaz’s decision to represent Morocco instead of Spain, emphasizing that players who truly desire to play for La Roja are the ones welcomed into his squad.
De la Fuente stated, “I respect his decision. Everyone has to make their own decisions.” He further explained the criteria for joining the national team, highlighting the importance of genuine willingness to represent the country without any reservations.
Despite not having spoken to Díaz before or after his decision, De la Fuente acknowledged Díaz’s extensive history with Spain’s youth squads. Reports suggested that Spain’s lack of interest in Díaz influenced his choice, with Morocco actively pursuing his inclusion in their team.
Díaz, who earned his sole senior cap for Spain in 2021, has never played a competitive game for the country. FIFA would need to process any request for a change in national team eligibility, although Díaz’s case is straightforward due to his limited international appearances.
After a strong season with Real Madrid, Díaz had been considered a potential call-up for Spain’s upcoming friendlies against Colombia and Brazil. However, he is now expected to join Morocco’s squad for their matches against Angola and Mauritania.
Díaz began his senior career at Manchester City before moving to Real Madrid in 2019. He also spent a significant loan spell at AC Milan from 2020 to 2023. Morocco notably defeated Spain in a penalty shootout during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
