Coco Gauff progressed to the fourth round of the French Open on Friday by defeating Dayana Yastremska 6-2, 6-4.
Gauff, seeded third, put pressure on her opponent, leading to 38 unforced errors from Yastremska. Gauff also capitalized on five of her 11 break point opportunities.
Following a day where several seeded players were eliminated, Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto caused another upset by defeating Liudmila Samsonova 7-6 (4), 6-2. Cocciaretto, ranked 51st, reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.
Cocciaretto will face Gauff next. Although Gauff acknowledged Cocciaretto’s fighting spirit, she expressed confidence having won their previous encounters.
Gauff, the reigning U.S. Open champion and 2022 French Open finalist, continues her impressive run.
Qualifier Olga Danilovic, ranked 125th, secured her first fourth-round appearance at a Grand Slam by defeating Donna Vekic 0-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8).
Rain interruptions persisted for the third consecutive day, with more showers expected in the afternoon. Play was already halted twice on Friday.
In the men’s tournament, Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner and Wimbledon winner Carlos Alcaraz were also competing.
