WWE reportedly had a strategic motive behind Cody Rhodes’ recent flirtation with the idea of facing Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 40.
The American Nightmare secured his second consecutive Men’s Royal Rumble victory, positioning himself for another shot at the world championship in the grand finale of WrestleMania 40. While initially appearing set on challenging Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship once more, Rhodes’ recent clash with Seth Rollins on Monday Night RAW hinted at a potential twist.
During a face-off on the Red Brand, The Visionary directly propositioned Rhodes, urging him to vie for the World Heavyweight Championship at the Show of Shows. In response, Rhodes neither outright declined nor accepted, intriguing fans with the prospect.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed WWE’s strategic intent to generate significant viewer interest with Rhodes’ decision-making process.
“The idea is they can build up for a week or two and pop a big rating for Cody’s decision,” Meltzer explained.
Prior to this, WWE had teased a potential feud between CM Punk and Seth Rollins following Punk’s return to the company. However, Punk’s plans were thwarted by an injury, ruling him out of WrestleMania contention. With Punk sidelined, speculation mounts regarding Rollins’ opponent at WrestleMania, leaving fans curious about who will step up to challenge him for the Heavyweight Championship.
If Rhodes ultimately opts to pursue Roman Reigns, there remain numerous worthy contenders in the fray eager to vie for Rollins’ coveted title. The unfolding weeks will shed light on which path Rhodes and WWE will ultimately choose to tread.
