Colorado Rockies right-hander German Marquez was placed on the 15-day injured list on Monday due to inflammation in his right elbow, just eight days after making his first start in the majors following Tommy John surgery.

Marquez underwent elbow surgery on May 12, 2023. He returned to the mound on July 14, pitching four innings and allowing three runs in the Rockies’ victory over the New York Mets.

Following the All-Star break, Marquez experienced tightness in his forearm during a bullpen session.

“German’s arm didn’t recover well after his start in New York,” explained Colorado manager Bud Black. “The issue dates back to his last rehab game in Hartford and his start in New York, where he had a high pitch count and increased intensity.”

Marquez, who threw 70 pitches in his outing against the Mets, will take several days off from throwing before resuming his rehabilitation.

“It makes sense to place him on the injured list,” Black added. “He was cautious during his side session on Saturday. It’s better to err on the side of caution. Hopefully, he’ll recover in just a couple of weeks.”

Marquez has a career record of 65-56 over nine seasons, all with the Rockies. He made four starts in 2023 before undergoing surgery.

In addition, Black mentioned that first baseman/outfielder Kris Bryant is expected to return from the injured list on Tuesday. Bryant has been sidelined since June 2 due to rib and oblique injuries. The former NL MVP has a batting average of .186 with two home runs in 24 games this season.
