As they near the end of a disappointing first half, the Colorado Rockies received positive medical updates on Friday.

Germán Márquez threw a bullpen session at Citi Field and is set to start on Sunday against the New York Mets, marking his return from Tommy John surgery. He has been on a minor league rehab assignment after last pitching in the majors on April 26, 2023.

“We’re excited to have him back. He’s eager, and the team is thrilled for his return,” manager Bud Black said. “We’ve been waiting for him to rejoin our rotation. He’s feeling strong and has been bouncing back well after his rehab starts.”

Márquez is expected to throw between 75 to 90 pitches on Sunday. The 29-year-old right-hander has accumulated at least 11 wins in four seasons and holds a career record of 65-56 with a 4.41 ERA, all with the Rockies.

“He’s a team-first player who cares deeply about his teammates and the organization,” Black added. “He’s a fierce competitor who loves being part of this team.”

Meanwhile, Kris Bryant, often plagued by injuries, took batting practice indoors and intensified his strength and conditioning routine. Manager Bud Black indicated that Bryant will likely start a minor league rehab assignment immediately after the All-Star break, which begins next Friday.

Bryant, 32, has been sidelined since June 3 due to a bruised left rib. He also missed time earlier in the season (April 14 to May 21) with a low back strain. Bryant’s standout career includes being named the 2016 NL MVP with the Chicago Cubs, helping them win their first World Series in over a century.

Despite signing a $182 million, seven-year deal with the Rockies in March 2022, Bryant has faced challenges staying healthy and productive this season, batting .186 with two home runs, 10 RBIs, and a .586 OPS in 24 games.
