The Washington Commanders have decided to release quarterback Sam Hartman from their 53-man roster, following the return of backup quarterback Marcus Mariota from injury. Hartman had been temporarily added to the active roster as a replacement while Mariota was recovering, but with Mariota now healthy, the team no longer needs Hartman in that role.
Sam Hartman, 25, was originally signed by the Commanders as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame earlier this year. After beginning the season on the practice squad, he was promoted to the active roster when Mariota was sidelined due to injury. Hartman’s time on the 53-man roster appears to have been a short-term move due to the team’s depth needs at quarterback.
There is a possibility that Hartman could remain with the organization, as he is eligible to rejoin the Commanders’ practice squad if he clears waivers. This would allow Washington to retain him as a developmental player without occupying a spot on the main roster.
With Hartman now waived, the Commanders’ quarterback depth chart includes starter Jayden Daniels, backup Marcus Mariota, and third-string quarterback Jeff Driskel. These three quarterbacks will continue to handle the duties for Washington moving forward, barring any further changes or injuries.
