The Washington Commanders have traded Jahan Dotson, a 2022 first-round pick, and a 2025 fifth-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles. In exchange, the Commanders received a third-round pick and two seventh-round picks in 2025. This trade reflects a strategic shift for both teams, with the Eagles enhancing their receiving corps and the Commanders retooling their roster.
For the Eagles, the acquisition of Dotson is a significant move to solidify their receiving lineup. Dotson will join star wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, both of whom signed long-term extensions this offseason. This new addition aims to complement their offensive setup, providing quarterback Jalen Hurts with another reliable target alongside running back Saquon Barkley and tight end Dallas Goedert.
Philadelphia had a diverse group of players vying for the No. 3 wide receiver position during the summer, including Parris Campbell, Britain Covey, and rookie Johnny Wilson. With Dotson now on the roster, the Eagles gain a more experienced and established option, addressing the need for depth in their receiving game.
Dotson, who is 24 years old, had a mixed performance with the Commanders last season, recording 49 receptions for 518 yards and four touchdowns. Despite being drafted 16th overall in 2022, he struggled to secure a prominent role opposite Terry McLaurin. His inconsistency was highlighted by a 7.4% drop rate, ranking among the highest in the NFL.
The Commanders are now focused on finding a dependable No. 2 receiver, a quest underscored by Coach Dan Quinn’s remarks and the recent selection of Luke McCaffrey in the third round. McCaffrey’s promising performance against the Miami Dolphins, coupled with the presence of veterans like Olamide Zaccheaus and Jamison Crowder, adds depth. The team has also brought in Byron Pringle and Martavis Bryant to further bolster their receiving options.
