Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown was poised to make a significant impact on the team’s defense last season. However, his rookie year took an unexpected turn as he spent it undergoing rehabilitation.
In a preseason game, the third-round pick suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while making a tackle on Seahawks running back Zach Charbonnet.
Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones recently provided an update, stating that Overshown, along with cornerback Trevon Diggs, who tore his left ACL in practice on Sept. 22, are progressing well and are expected to be ready for training camp.
“We’re pushing right at six months out,” Overshown said Tuesday, as reported by Nick Harris of the team website. “Everything is going good. We’re starting to move around. We’re ahead of the curve. It’s just a process. . . . This isn’t what my rookie year was supposed to be, but you get up, and you do it every day.”
Before his injury, Overshown had caught the attention of coach Mike McCarthy with his exceptional performance in training camp. With veteran Leighton Vander Esch anticipated to retire, the Cowboys eagerly await Overshown’s return to bolster their defense.
Looking ahead, Overshown expressed his determination to approach the upcoming season with renewed vigor. “More hungry,” Overshown emphasized. “All the excitement that was built up in year one is still in there. It’s ready to be unleashed on people.
The glimpse that y’all got last year, you should expect 10 times more than that. This ACL injury will not be an excuse for anything going into the season at all. I’m gonna be ready to play and [fans] should expect that.”
