Cristina Bucsa and Sara Sorribes Tormo won the women’s tennis doubles bronze medal for Spain at the Paris Olympics, defeating Karolína Muchová and Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday. This was just their second tournament together, following their win in Madrid in May.
This victory earned Spain its fifth medal in women’s doubles at the Summer Games. Neither Bucsa nor Sorribes Tormo has won a Grand Slam doubles title.
Later on Sunday, Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider were competing in the women’s doubles final for the Individual Neutral Athletes team because Russia, their country, could not officially participate due to its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
They were set to play against Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini from Italy.
Muchova and Noskova, making their debut as a team, had previously eliminated the top-seeded American pair of Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula in the second round. Muchova had been the runner-up to Iga Swiatek at the 2023 French Open and reached the semifinals at the U.S. Open before losing to Gauff.
She had returned to play in June after a 10-month absence due to wrist surgery.
The 19-year-old Noskova’s major achievement came at the Australian Open in January, where she reached the quarterfinals and became the first teenager to defeat a No. 1-ranked player at Melbourne Park since 1999.
