The Panthers recently acquired edge rusher D.J. Wonnum following the trade of Brian Burns to the Giants, leading many to perceive Wonnum as Burns’ successor in Carolina’s defense.
However, Wonnum has a different perspective. In a press conference on Monday, when asked about stepping into Burns’ role, Wonnum emphasized his focus on personal improvement.
“Well, I’m not looking to replace anybody,” Wonnum stated. “I’m looking to be the best version of myself, the best player I know I can be. And, the film that I’ve put out there, I can be an every-down starter. I can play the run, I can pass rush, I can drop in coverage, I can do whatever the coach wants me to do.
Obviously, going here and coming here, I’ll be able to showcase that. And the future is bright for myself and the Carolina Panthers.” During his tenure with Danielle Hunter in Minnesota over the last four years, Wonnum amassed 23 sacks.
Although he lacks a similar complementary player on the opposite side in Carolina, there is optimism that Wonnum’s full potential can lead to an even greater impact.
