Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott faced questions regarding the potential impact of a hamstring injury that sidelined him during the team’s 27-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Following the game, Prescott knocked on the wooden lectern when asked about the injury’s severity, indicating he would undergo an MRI on Monday for further evaluation.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones described it as a “high hamstring” injury. Prescott expressed optimism about playing in the upcoming Week 10 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles on November 10, stating that he has a history of quick recovery from injuries. He remained hopeful but acknowledged that he would need to wait for the MRI results to determine the extent of the damage.
Prescott described the moment he sustained the injury, which occurred after a 5-yard scramble late in the third quarter. He felt a strange sensation as he stood up from the run, although he initially thought it was minor. However, upon attempting to throw a pass shortly thereafter, he realized the injury was more serious. Concerned about exacerbating the injury, he consulted the medical staff, who advised him that he would not be able to protect himself if he continued to play. As a result, Prescott was replaced by backup quarterback Cooper Rush for the fourth quarter.
In the game, Prescott completed 18 of 24 passes for 133 yards and one touchdown, while also recording a season-high 30 rushing yards. His performance included a notable 22-yard run during a scoring drive, marking the Cowboys’ longest run of the season. Although Prescott’s right hand appeared swollen during the broadcast, Jerry Jones downplayed concerns regarding that injury, emphasizing that the hamstring was the primary issue at hand. Jones expressed concern about Prescott potentially missing upcoming games, further underscoring the significance of the MRI results.
If Prescott is unable to play, Cooper Rush will take the starting role, backed by Trey Lance. Rush’s performance in relief of Prescott included completing 13 of 25 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. He has experience stepping in for Prescott, having led the team to a 4-1 record as a starter last season when Prescott was injured. Offensive lineman Zack Martin expressed confidence in Rush’s ability to lead the team, noting his familiarity with the offense and his capability to command the huddle effectively.
Prescott, who signed a four-year, $240 million contract before the season, has been a consistent starter, with 36 consecutive games under his belt since recovering from a thumb injury. He emphasized the mental aspect of playing quarterback, stating that he could still learn and prepare even if he couldn’t practice. Prescott is determined to recover swiftly and test the hamstring in practice to maintain his streak of starts, underscoring his commitment to being available for the crucial matchup against the Eagles.
