After 13 seasons, it appears that Tyron Smith’s tenure with the Dallas Cowboys is nearing its end. According to a source familiar with the situation as reported by The Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys are considering moving on from Smith after meeting with his agent at the NFL scouting combine.
The eight-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro is poised to become a free agent on March 13. While Smith previously expressed his desire to continue playing for the Cowboys, there seem to be significant disparities in their financial negotiations, with two individuals close to the matter indicating a wide gap between the club and Smith.
Despite being widely regarded as one of the premier left tackles when healthy, Smith’s availability has been hampered by injuries in recent years.
Since 2015, he has appeared in only 82 out of a possible 131 games, battling ankle, knee, and hamstring issues that have caused him to miss a total of 23 games over the last three seasons.
In 2022, Smith underwent surgery for a severe hamstring injury sustained during training camp but managed to return and start the final four games of the season. Although he started 13 games last season, he missed four due to knee, back, and neck problems, with his last full season being in 2015.
