Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has always said that contract talks with CeeDee Lamb are still happening, even though Lamb’s holdout continues.
On Thursday, the situation took a different turn when Jones stated that he “doesn’t have any urgency” to resolve the issue. Lamb responded by posting “lol.” on social media just 10 minutes later.
This was Lamb’s first public comment on the situation since training camp began.
Lamb, 25, is entering the last season of his rookie contract after being drafted 17th overall in 2020. He led the NFL in receptions last season and has had over 1,100 receiving yards in each of the past three seasons, setting a career high with 1,749 yards in 2023.
Jones, who is also the team’s general manager, didn’t provide a clear reason for why he isn’t rushing to finalize a deal with Lamb.
“I don’t have a sense of urgency about getting it done,” Jones said. “Put any reason you want. I was at Nobu two days ago. Give that as the reason. Whatever you want to put out there.”
Jones also expressed confidence that Lamb would be ready for the Cowboys’ season opener against Cleveland on September 8.
When asked about how the receiving corps is developing in Lamb’s absence, Jones said, “I don’t expect not to have CeeDee Lamb, but this camp has given time, opportunities” to other players.
Quarterback Dak Prescott, who is also in the final year of his contract, showed support for Lamb after Jones’ comments.
After his press conference, Prescott jokingly told reporters, “I know y’all want to ask, I got urgency for it to happen.”
