Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons expressed his deep disappointment over the team’s decision to part ways with head coach Mike McCarthy after five seasons. Parsons, who has played under McCarthy since joining the NFL, called the decision “devastating,” emphasizing the strong relationships and successes the team had during McCarthy’s tenure.

McCarthy, who led the Cowboys to three consecutive 12-5 seasons and multiple playoff appearances, was unable to reach a contract extension, leading to his departure. “I’m obviously very sad because of the relationships we had with Coach McCarthy and everything he’s done for our program,” Parsons said on “The Edge” podcast.

“Three straight 12-5 seasons, playoff appearances and obviously an unfortunate year due to injuries… It is devastating. Coach Mike is a great father, great coach. One of the winningest coaches. He’s always been good to us as a unit, coaches, players. Losing a great coach like Mike hurts.”

McCarthy and the Cowboys parted ways on Monday after failing to agree on a new contract, ending his five-year stint as head coach. During his time with the team, McCarthy posted a 49-35 overall record. The 2024 season, however, was challenging, with a 7-10 record and many injuries.

Despite the regular-season success, McCarthy’s playoff record was disappointing, with just one win in four postseason games. The Cowboys suffered home losses in the wild-card round against the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 and the Green Bay Packers in 2023, both of which played a role in the decision to move on from McCarthy.

“It’s going to be a very interesting offseason. It’s going to be very interesting due to the free agents, coaching,” Parsons said. “It’s going to be a complete reset. So, it’s going to be a very interesting and challenging offseason.”

Parsons’ emotional response reflects the significant impact McCarthy had on both the team and individual players. This change is expected to affect the team’s unity and could influence the Cowboys’ strategy in the seasons ahead.

“But listen, I already know … I trust my owner, I trust our GM, I trust vice president of player personnel Will McClay that we’re going to make the right decisions when it comes to coaching,” Parsons added.

Parsons also expressed confidence in Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to find the right replacement for McCarthy. Jones has reportedly spoken with former Cowboys star Deion Sanders, who is now the head coach at Colorado, and discussions are expected to continue.

Quarterback Dak Prescott also shared his disappointment over McCarthy’s departure, sending a text message to DLLS Sports on Monday night. Prescott wrote, “I’m bummed, because we built some things. But I guess they couldn’t reach an agreement. SMH.”
