Dak Prescott was held out of a light practice on Friday as a precaution because he was feeling mild soreness in his surgically repaired right ankle.

This decision was made a day after the Cowboys had their only joint practice of training camp with the Los Angeles Rams. The Cowboys and Rams will face each other in their preseason opener on Sunday in Los Angeles.

Prescott, who probably won’t play in the preseason, is entering the final season of his $160 million, four-year contract but has not missed any time in camp.

His top receiver, All-Pro CeeDee Lamb, is holding out while trying to get a new contract with a year still left on his rookie deal.

Prescott is now four years removed from the severe ankle injury he suffered in Week 5 of 2020. The 31-year-old was not wearing a protective boot as he watched the light practice in California.

Before the Cowboys started camp, a picture of Prescott wearing a boot while on vacation in Mexico circulated on social media. Prescott later said the boot was for precautionary reasons.

Last season, Prescott was the runner-up in NFL MVP voting after leading the NFL with a career-high 36 touchdown passes and throwing for 4,516 yards with nine interceptions.

The Cowboys made the playoffs with a 12-5 record for the third year in a row but lost at home to Green Bay 48-32 as the No. 2 seed in the NFC. Dallas is the only team with three consecutive 12-5 playoff seasons but has not reached a conference championship game.
