Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell has expressed unwavering confidence in Aidan Hutchinson, even after the star edge rusher underwent surgery for a fractured tibia and fibula. While the expected recovery period is four to six months, Campbell refuses to rule out Hutchinson’s return this season, emphasizing his resilience and determination. Hutchinson’s surgery, performed in Texas, went well, and Campbell believes that if anyone can make a comeback from such a significant injury, it’s Hutchinson.

Hutchinson sustained the injury during the Lions’ dominant 47-9 win over the Dallas Cowboys, while sacking quarterback Dak Prescott. His leg fractured after colliding with teammate Alim McNeill’s during the play. Despite the severity of the injury, Hutchinson remains optimistic about returning, and Campbell is confident that Hutchinson’s strong mindset will aid his recovery. He emphasized that Hutchinson has a rare ability to push himself and recover faster than expected.

Although Hutchinson’s absence is a significant blow to the defense, Campbell believes the team can still achieve their goals. He has faith in defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and the players like McNeill, Josh Paschal, Levi Onwuzurike, and DJ Reader to step up and fill Hutchinson’s role. McNeill, who witnessed the injury, expressed his support for Hutchinson and stressed the need for the rest of the defense to rise to the occasion in his absence.

Lions general manager Brad Holmes may consider adding reinforcements to the defense, but Campbell emphasized that there’s no immediate urgency. He trusts the current roster and believes the team has enough depth to adjust. Campbell reinforced a “next man up” mentality, ensuring that the coaching staff is prepared to get the best out of the players already on the roster while remaining open to outside additions if necessary.

Hutchinson’s injury has impacted the team emotionally, but it has also galvanized them to play in his honor. Before the injury, Hutchinson was one of the top candidates for Defensive Player of the Year, leading the league in sacks and pressures. Despite losing one of their key players, Campbell is determined to keep the Lions focused on their ultimate goal of winning the Super Bowl. He stressed that the team is not panicking and is ready to adjust as needed to stay competitive.
