The Bears have traded quarterback Justin Fields, who was a first-round pick in 2021. The coach of one of Chicago’s top rivals, Lions coach Dan Campbell, expressed relief that Fields is no longer in the division.

“It’s a relief to have Fields out of that division,” said Campbell during the league meetings in Orlando, according to Ryan Taylor of NBCSportsChicago.com.

However, Campbell might not be excited about the replacement. The Bears traded Fields because they plan to use the first pick on a potential upgrade over Fields. It’s likely to be Caleb Williams, unless Williams decides not to play for the Bears — and if the Bears respect his decision.

No sign yet that Williams doesn’t want to play for the Bears. The Bears might have traded Fields to the Steelers for little to ensure Williams would choose to play for them.

Three years ago, the Bears gave up several draft picks to get Fields at No. 11. Fields was seen as the future quarterback until the situation changed.

Williams, in a few years, could face a similar situation. By accommodating Fields’ trade request, Williams might believe the Bears will do the same for him if things don’t go well for him and the Bears in Chicago.
