Hours after being traded to Los Angeles in the middle of the season, D’Angelo Russell received a call from Lakers president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka on February 9, 2023. Pelinka welcomed back the 28-year-old guard to the franchise that drafted him second overall in 2015.
Russell was told about the crucial role his contributions would play in the Lakers’ late-season push after being acquired in a deadline deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was expected to partner with his childhood idol, LeBron James, in the point position, a partnership made possible by the cap-clearing trade that had ended Russell’s first stint with the team in 2018.
Despite the trade moving him from the eighth-place Wolves to the 13th-place Lakers, Russell wasn’t as optimistic as Pelinka. “I told him we weren’t s—,” Russell told ESPN. “[But] the team complemented one another … and we started winning.”
The Lakers rose to seventh in the Western Conference over the final two months of the 2022-23 season. During this run, Russell showcased his abilities in critical moments, such as his standout performances against the Memphis Grizzlies and the Golden State Warriors in the playoffs.
However, Russell’s playing time was reduced after struggling in the conference finals, eventually leading to his benching in Game 4 against the Denver Nuggets, who went on to win the series.
Russell felt sidelined, especially considering the history between Lakers coach Darvin Ham and veteran guard Dennis Schroder, which affected his relationship with Ham.
Despite starting every game after the trade, Russell had his role diminished as the playoffs progressed. But he rebounded during the regular season, becoming a significant factor in the Lakers’ push towards the postseason, with impressive stats and crucial performances.
In the offseason, Russell re-signed with the Lakers on a two-year, $37 million deal, with a player option for the second season. The negotiation included discussions about trade clauses and his future with the team.
Throughout the season, Russell’s name was frequently mentioned in trade talks, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding his future with the Lakers. Despite this, Russell focused on his individual performance and embraced his role on the team.
He also drew inspiration from Kobe Bryant’s advice to create new headlines and maintain focus amidst media speculation.
Russell’s standout performances, particularly in the absence of LeBron James, have been crucial for the Lakers, highlighting his resilience and importance to the team.
Despite facing doubts and trade rumors, Russell remains determined to make an impact with the Lakers and enjoys the opportunity to shine on the court.
