Danielle Collins, who won the Miami Open, continued her impressive streak by winning two matches on Thursday. She defeated Ons Jabeur and Sloane Stephens to advance to the quarterfinals of the Charleston Open, which had been delayed due to rain.
Collins, who has announced that this will be her last season on the tour, has now won 10 matches in a row and 20 out of her last 21 sets.
She played the first match of the day against defending champion Jabeur after the rain delay. Despite spending over three hours on the court for both matches combined, Collins showed no signs of slowing down.
She defeated Jabeur 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in 2 hours and 3 minutes, then returned later in the day to beat former U.S. Open champion Stephens 6-2, 6-2 in just over an hour.
Collins reflected on the challenges of adjusting to the weather conditions and the need for flexibility in such situations. Jabeur, currently ranked sixth, lost her opening match for the fourth consecutive tournament, bringing her season record to 2-6.
Next, Collins will face Elise Mertens, who also won two matches on Thursday. Mertens defeated Varvara Gracheva in the morning and then Elina Svitolina in the evening.
Top-seeded Jessica Pegula also advanced to the quarterfinals with a victory over Magda Linette, while Victoria Azarenka rallied to defeat Taylor Townsend. Veronika Kudermetova, the defending champion, secured her spot in the next round with a win over Beatriz Haddad Maia and will face Maria Sakkari in the quarterfinals.
Collins, who won the Miami Open last month, acknowledged Jabeur’s skill and tricky shots but remained mentally resilient during their match. Jabeur admitted facing a confident opponent like Collins was tough.
In another match, Jaqueline Cristian, playing in Charleston for the first time, defeated Emma Navarro after defeating Madison Keys earlier in the week.
