Dansby Swanson hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning, giving the Chicago Cubs a 7-5 win against the Cincinnati Reds on a rainy Saturday night.

Seiya Suzuki made a mistake but then hit his first career grand slam in a chaotic inning as Chicago won only its second game out of the last 10. Nico Hoerner contributed with two walks, two runs, and an RBI.

Mark Leiter Jr. earned the win, and Héctor Neris secured the save. Swanson expressed satisfaction with the team’s effort despite facing tough conditions and obstacles throughout the day.

Spencer Steer had three hits for Cincinnati, which had won five of its last seven games. The game started late due to rain, and the showers continued during the first few innings at Wrigley Field.

The game was tied at 5 when Hoerner walked with one out in the eighth inning against Lucas Sims (1-2). Swanson then hit his fifth homer with a 0-2 fastball.

Cincinnati took advantage of Suzuki’s error in the second inning, scoring four unearned runs. Suzuki then responded with a grand slam in the same inning.

Chicago took the lead in the third inning with Hoerner’s RBI single, but Cincinnati tied it at 5 when Jeimer Candelario singled home Stuart Fairchild in the fourth.

Greene allowed three hits in six innings, but he walked five and hit two batters. He had been performing well in his previous six starts.

“Early on he had the inning where he lost command a little bit and Suzuki got him. Missed a spot,” Reds manager David Bell said. “And other than that he really pitched well. … An experience like tonight, he couldn’t have handled it any better in my opinion.”
