Davante Adams is set to make his debut for the New York Jets this Sunday night when they face the Pittsburgh Steelers, following his trade from the Las Vegas Raiders earlier in the week. Jets interim coach Jeff Ulbrich confirmed Adams’ participation in team walk-throughs and expressed optimism that the star receiver would play. While there is a challenge in quickly integrating Adams into the offense, Ulbrich noted that his familiarity with the system should ease the transition.
Adams had missed the Raiders’ last three games due to a hamstring injury, which coincided with his request to be traded. Appearing on “The Pat McAfee Show” earlier this week, Adams said he was feeling healthy and ready to play. This means he will reunite with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, rekindling a partnership that was one of the most productive in recent NFL history during their years together with the Green Bay Packers. Together, they amassed an impressive 7,517 yards and 68 touchdowns.
Coach Ulbrich emphasized the unique chemistry between Rodgers and Adams, built over years of playing together. He highlighted their strong football IQs, which allow them to operate at a higher level on the field. Beyond Adams’ on-field skills, Ulbrich also praised his character and humility, noting that Adams would be a positive influence in the locker room as well as a dynamic playmaker on offense. Last season, Adams recorded 103 receptions for 1,144 yards and eight touchdowns with the Raiders.
Adams will join a Jets receiving group that includes key players like Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard, raising questions about how the offense will balance the talent. Offensive coordinator Todd Downing will need to integrate Adams while ensuring the other receivers continue to have opportunities. Despite the challenges of juggling roles, Ulbrich sees this as a chance to create more flexibility in the offense, with options to move receivers around based on matchups and play design.
Mike Williams, another Jets receiver, may see his role shift as a result of Adams’ arrival. Williams has struggled to connect with Rodgers, and his mistakes have contributed to costly interceptions in recent games. However, Ulbrich expressed confidence in Downing’s ability to involve all the receivers in the game plan, ensuring each has a chance to contribute. Meanwhile, Rodgers, dealing with a sore left ankle, is expected to return to practice later in the week and should be ready for Sunday’s game.
