David Montgomery has officially signed a two-year contract extension with the Detroit Lions worth $18.25 million, ensuring his presence with the team through the 2027 season. This new deal features $10.5 million in guaranteed money and places him as the seventh-highest-paid running back in the NFL, with an annual salary of $9.125 million based on new money. The Lions made the announcement on Saturday evening, though they did not disclose the full terms of the extension.
At 27 years old, Montgomery still had two years remaining on his existing contract when the Lions opted to secure his future early. This decision reflects the team’s commitment to its backfield duo, which includes second-year running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Currently, Montgomery ranks as Detroit’s second-leading rusher, accumulating 271 yards and four touchdowns from a team-high 63 carries this season, while Gibbs has recorded 285 rushing yards on 54 attempts and three touchdowns.
Montgomery joined the Lions in 2023 as an unrestricted free agent after four seasons with the Chicago Bears. His impact has been immediate, starting all 18 games he has played for Detroit. His strong performances have established a powerful one-two punch in the Lions’ backfield alongside Gibbs, further solidifying the team’s offensive capabilities.
In a recent interview following the Lions’ Week 4 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, Gibbs voiced his confidence in their partnership, asserting that they are the best running back duo in the NFL.
