Denver Nuggets point guard Jamal Murray has agreed to a four-year extension worth $208 million, a source told The Associated Press on Saturday.
The source, who spoke anonymously, said that the deal is pending the necessary signatures and will prevent Murray from becoming a free agent next summer.
Murray made a remarkable comeback from a torn ACL that kept him out for the entire 2021-22 season and played a key role in helping the Nuggets win their first NBA championship in 2023.
However, his recent season was marred by injuries, and he also had a disappointing performance in the Paris Olympics, where he often came off the bench.
In Denver, Murray forms a strong offensive partnership with three-time MVP Nikola Jokic, making them one of the top duos in the NBA.
This extension, which has been in negotiation for several months, will keep Murray with the Nuggets until the end of the 2028-29 season.
Murray, the franchise’s all-time leader in 3-pointers, had a career-high average of 21.2 points and 6.5 assists last season but missed several games due to injuries.
He had notable game-winning shots in the Nuggets’ first-round series against the Los Angeles Lakers but was limited in their seven-game loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round.
General manager Calvin Booth emphasized that the team needs Murray to be in top form for the upcoming season and for another deep playoff run.
Murray struggled in the Olympics, averaging just 6 points per game and shooting under 30% from the field and 15% from three-point range, which led some Nuggets fans to question whether his extension would be finalized.
