Detroit Lions defensive back Cameron Sutton is being sought in Florida on a domestic violence warrant, with authorities requesting tips to locate him.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, covering Tampa, announced on the X social media platform that the warrant is for domestic battery by strangulation, a third-degree felony carrying a sentence of up to five years in prison. Sutton may be driving a Jeep Grand Wagoneer with a Florida license plate, according to the sheriff’s office.
Responding to a call about domestic violence in progress involving Sutton, 29, and a female around 5 a.m. on March 7, Phil Martello, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, stated that the department issued the warrant based on the evidence collected and suspects Sutton has left Tampa. Attempts to contact him have been unsuccessful, Martello informed the Detroit Free Press.
“Our detectives have exhausted everything to try and get ahold of him,” Martello remarked. It remains unclear if Sutton has legal representation. Neither a text message nor an email sent to Sutton’s agent, David Canter, received an immediate response. A voicemail was left on a cellphone purportedly belonging to Sutton.
The warrant provided by the sheriff’s department was largely redacted, but it did mention a residence owned by Sutton in Dunedin, Florida, along the Gulf Coast, as per property records.
The Lions inked Sutton to a $33 million, three-year contract a little over a year ago, identifying him as a pivotal acquisition last offseason. He contributed to the franchise clinching a division title for the first time in three decades, as well as securing two playoff victories in a single postseason for the first time since 1957.
“We became aware of the ongoing legal situation involving Cam Sutton this morning,” the Lions stated in a release. “We will continue to monitor the situation and will not have further comment at this time.”
Sutton started all 17 regular-season games, recording a career-high 65 tackles and one interception, and played in each of Detroit’s three playoff matchups.
Previously, Sutton started 31 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2021 and 202 seasons, accumulating five interceptions and 95 tackles. The Steelers selected the former Tennessee star, hailing from Jonesboro, Georgia, in the third round of the 2017 draft. He has amassed nine interceptions in 101 career games.
