DJ LeMahieu, the third baseman for the New York Yankees, will not be playing for at least another week. This decision came after an MRI and CT scan showed that his fractured right foot still had swelling.
The 35-year-old, who has won the batting title twice, had to stop playing during his minor league rehabilitation game with Double-A Somerset on Tuesday due to discomfort in his right foot. He originally injured it on March 16 during a spring training game.
LeMahieu was supposed to play at least four games before rejoining the Yankees for their series against Baltimore on Monday, but now his return is delayed.
“It’s tough because DJ’s a big part of this team,” said Aaron Judge, a key player for the Yankees. “What he’s been doing the past couple of seasons and to not have him here right now, I know all the guys are feeling it, but the most important thing is him getting healthy.”
Last season, LeMahieu had his lowest batting average at .243 with 15 home runs and 44 RBIs in 136 games. Although he struggled in the first half of the season with a .220 batting average, he improved in the second half, hitting .273.
In 2022, he missed the postseason due to a broken sesamoid bone in his right big toe, which also caused ligament damage in his second toe.
