Tyler Huntley has officially been named the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins in their upcoming game against the Tennessee Titans, as confirmed by head coach Mike McDaniel. The decision comes after Skylar Thompson was sidelined due to a rib injury sustained in last week’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks. While Thompson may be available as an emergency option during the game, Tim Boyle has been designated as Huntley’s primary backup.
McDaniel expressed strong confidence in Huntley, emphasizing his prior experience in high-pressure situations and his ability to lead the team effectively. The coach noted that Huntley has shown the necessary qualities to earn the trust of his teammates and adapt to his new role. He highlighted Huntley’s accelerated maturity and integration into the Dolphins’ locker room, suggesting that he is well-equipped to handle the complexities of the team’s offensive system.
Having joined the Dolphins from the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad, Huntley is stepping into the spotlight after starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was placed on injured reserve due to a concussion. A native of South Florida, Huntley is thrilled about the chance to start for his hometown team, despite the challenge of quickly learning a complex offense. He likened his adaptation process to riding a bike, describing the initial awkwardness but noting that he is increasingly comfortable and confident in executing plays.
Huntley’s track record is impressive, with nine starts over four seasons with the Ravens. He has accumulated 1,957 passing yards and eight touchdowns while also showcasing his running ability with 503 rushing yards and three touchdowns. His performance in 2022 earned him a Pro Bowl selection, where he played a key role in guiding the Ravens to a playoff berth in the absence of starter Lamar Jackson. His dual-threat capabilities are seen as a valuable addition to a Dolphins offense that has struggled early in the season.
Support from Huntley’s teammates has been notable, particularly from wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who praised Huntley’s work ethic and talent. Hill expressed confidence in Huntley’s abilities, noting that he can make all the necessary throws and adds a dynamic element with his legs.
However, the Dolphins will face challenges heading into Monday’s game, including the absence of starting left tackle Terron Armstead and cornerback Kendall Fuller, both in concussion protocol. Running back Raheem Mostert is also expected to miss the game, while linebacker David Long’s status is uncertain and will be decided closer to kickoff.
