T.J. Otzelberger’s grip on the Big 12 Tournament trophy seemed uncertain at first, his polo shirt stretched to its limits, but the Iowa State coach adjusted and hoisted it proudly after a dominant performance by his Cyclones.

Led by Keshon Gilbert, named the tournament’s most outstanding player, and supported by a well-balanced roster, the Cyclones overwhelmed No. 1 Houston in the championship game. Gilbert contributed 16 points as Iowa State cruised to a 69-41 victory, claiming their sixth Big 12 trophy in as many title game appearances.

The margin of victory was historic, marking the largest defeat of a No. 1 team since UCLA’s 32-point win over Houston in the 1968 Final Four.

“I give our guys all the credit,” Otzelberger said. “You want to be playing your best this time of year, and I don’t think there’s any question that’s what we’re doing.”

Milan Momcilovic scored 18 points and Hason Ward added 13 for the Cyclones (27-7), who showcased their depth by defeating five different opponents en route to the title. Houston coach Kelvin Sampson, who previously led Oklahoma, could only watch as his team struggled to keep pace with Iowa State’s relentless attack.

“It doesn’t seem to matter who is coaching Iowa State at the Big 12 Tournament,” Otzelberger remarked, joining the ranks of coaches who have guided the Cyclones to victory.

Houston (30-4) struggled to find its rhythm, with Jamal Shead managing only 10 points on 3-for-17 shooting. Despite their disappointment, Sampson commended his team’s resilience.

“Forty minutes is not going to define three months,” Sampson said, emphasizing the Cougars’ successful season despite the tournament loss.

Iowa State’s dominance was evident from the start, as they outplayed Houston on both ends of the court. The Cyclones executed their game plan flawlessly, frustrating Houston’s offense and capitalizing on scoring opportunities.

As the final buzzer sounded, Iowa State celebrated a well-deserved victory, proving their worth as champions of the Big 12.
