Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi will be out for over a month due to a muscle injury after scoring three goals in his team’s 7-1 victory over Celtic. His American teammate Gio Reyna has also faced another setback in his recovery from a groin injury.
Adeyemi’s injury is more serious than initially thought and comes right after his impressive first-half hat trick on Tuesday, which had Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin excited about his potential to be a top player for the Champions League runner-up.
Adeyemi was taken off early in the second half of the game against Celtic due to what appeared to be a thigh issue, but he had suggested it didn’t seem too serious. Now, Sahin says Adeyemi is not expected to return until after the international break in mid-November.
This means the 22-year-old forward will miss a Champions League match against Real Madrid on October 22, which is a rematch of last season’s final, as well as a tough Bundesliga match against Leipzig on November 2.
Sahin also mentioned that 18-year-old forward Julien Duranville, who came on for Adeyemi in the Celtic match, will be out for a similar length of time due to a thigh injury.
Reyna strained his groin while training with the U.S. national team last month, which caused him to miss friendly matches against Canada and New Zealand. Now, Dortmund has reported a “setback” in his recovery, but the club did not provide more details about when he might return.
This is just the latest in a series of injury challenges for Reyna, whose only playing time for Dortmund this season was a short substitute appearance in the first Bundesliga game in August.
Dortmund’s next match is on Saturday against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga.
