Dylan Moore hit a home run and Bryce Miller pitched six scoreless innings as the Seattle Mariners won 6-1 against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night, extending their winning streak to three games.
Miller (11-8) gave up three hits and two walks while striking out four batters. The 26-year-old right-hander leads the American League with nine starts of six or more innings without allowing an earned run.
“He’s just so calm and collected out there,” Mariners manager Dan Wilson said. “He just keeps throwing up zeros, and I thought he had good stuff again tonight, especially with his breaking ball, which was really outstanding at times.
He keeps doing what we emphasize: controlling the strike zone, dominating it, and staying ahead of the hitters. When he does that and has good defense behind him, he’s extremely tough.”
Jordan Walker hit his second home run of the season off Troy Taylor in the seventh inning, accounting for the Cardinals’ only run.
Cal Raleigh hit a two-run double in the Mariners’ three-run ninth inning, raising his RBI total for the season to 89. Raleigh set the Mariners’ single-season record for RBIs by a catcher, surpassing Wilson’s previous mark of 83 on Tuesday in Oakland.
“Getting three runs in the ninth is big,” Wilson said. “It takes a lot of pressure off our pitching staff. That’s all important, and it all adds up. It’s the little things that make a big difference, and adding on late in the game is crucial.”
With J.P. Crawford on base, Moore hit his 10th home run of the season on the first pitch from Matthew Liberatore in the sixth inning, putting Seattle ahead 3-0.
