Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Bryce Huff is scheduled to have surgery on his left wrist on Thursday, a procedure that may allow him to return later in the season.

Huff joined the Eagles after leaving the New York Jets in free agency, signing a three-year, $51 million contract. Over his four seasons with the Jets, he recorded 17 1/2 career sacks, 65 total tackles, and one forced fumble.

Before injuring his wrist, Huff had already faced challenges in his first season with Philadelphia. He has only 2 1/2 sacks and four quarterback hits this year, and his playing time has decreased since he was hurt before a game against Jacksonville earlier this month.

Huff had been playing with a cast on his wrist that kept his thumb immobilized.

“He’s really done a good job of battling through,” said coach Nick Sirianni on Wednesday. “This will hopefully help him get some more function in that hand.”

Nolan Smith has taken Huff’s place as the starting edge rusher, and rookie third-round pick Jalyx Hunt is expected to see more playing time while Huff is out for the Eagles (8-2).

“We feel good about some of the depth we have here,” Sirianni added.

The Eagles are currently in first place in the NFC East and hold the second-best record in the conference as they head into Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.
