Edgar Berlanga, the unbeaten American fighter known for his early career knockout streak, has expressed confidence ahead of his bout with Mexican boxing star Canelo Alvarez. Berlanga, who achieved 16 consecutive first-round knockouts early in his career, is set to challenge Canelo for his WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles on September 14 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Berlanga believes his knockout power will be a significant factor in the fight, emphasizing that he has even knocked out heavyweights in sparring.

Despite his impressive start, Berlanga’s recent performances have seen him secure only one finish in his last six bouts—a sixth-round TKO against Padraig McCrory in February.

Berlanga attributes this to a temporary loss of his “killer instinct” during a period away from his original trainer, Mark Farrait. He believes his recent training and the tough mentality developed by his team, including former felons, have rejuvenated his fighting spirit and focus.

Berlanga’s comments highlight a renewed belief in his power and his readiness to face Canelo. He is confident that his strength and mental approach will overcome Canelo’s well-established reputation and technical skills. Berlanga sees the fight as a test of mental toughness rather than just physical prowess.

Canelo Alvarez, on the other hand, brings a wealth of experience and a distinguished career to the ring. With a record of 65 fights and only one recent defeat to Dmitry Bivol in 2022, Canelo is recognized as one of the finest fighters of his generation. His experience and skill set make him a formidable opponent, adding significant weight to his legacy in the sport.

Despite Canelo’s pedigree, Berlanga remains undeterred by his opponent’s reputation. He emphasizes that Canelo, like himself, is human and that the key to victory lies in mental strength and determination. Berlanga’s approach underscores his belief that mental preparation and confidence will be crucial in overcoming Canelo’s extensive experience and success.
