Edouard Julien hit a three-run homer, leading the Minnesota Twins to a 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday, following a 13-minute delay mostly due to a video review.
In the seventh inning, with the Rays trailing 4-2 and Jonny DeLuca on third base, Yandy Díaz hit a ball toward the right-field corner. Matt Wallner caught the ball on two hops, but his momentum carried him over the low wall and into a camera well, allowing DeLuca to score.
Umpires reviewed the play for about nine minutes and decided that Díaz should be placed on second base. Rays manager Kevin Cash felt the review decision was correct, as Wallner had possession of the ball before going into the stands.
Twins manager Rocco Baldelli then brought in reliever Griffin Jax to replace Pablo López (14-8). Jax got Brandon Lowe out on a grounder.
Díaz, who had two of the Rays’ eight hits, said that the review made a difference, as being on third base would have allowed for more scoring opportunities.
López gave up three runs and seven hits, while striking out nine and walking one. His previous scoreless streak of 23 1/3 innings ended with Junior Caminero’s two-run single in the third inning.
López was frustrated by the long review time, which he felt might have affected his ability to finish the inning.
Jhoan Durán recorded two strikeouts in a perfect ninth inning, securing his 22nd save in 24 opportunities, as the Twins split the four-game series.
