Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has expressed concern over the injury suffered by center-back Lisandro Martínez during the team’s 3-0 Premier League victory against West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday (February 4).
Ten Hag stated that the initial signs regarding Martinez’s injury are not promising, and he is awaiting further diagnosis. He conveyed his apprehension, mentioning via BBC:
“It seems bad. We have to wait and make the right diagnosis. At this moment, we are very sad. Hopefully, it is not too bad, but we can only pray. It looks like he has to sit some games out injured again.”
The Argentine defender had recently returned to action after being sidelined since September. His start against West Ham United marked his third appearance since his comeback.
Manchester United fans were understandably concerned last week when Lisandro Martínez was seen with an ice pack on the bench. However, manager Erik ten Hag moved to ease worries, explaining that the substitution was purely precautionary. Speaking to the club’s website, he stated:
“It was a precaution. I took him off because I had to sub Rasmus (Hojlund). After all, he was dead with all his running! But, then, we needed an extra header, but, also for Licha, I think he is a long way out. We brought Harry on for (an) extra header and Omari Forson for Rasmus.”
With Harry Maguire back in the squad, the Englishman was able to start in Sunday’s victory over West Ham.
Young forward Rasmus Hojlund celebrated his 21st birthday, intending to open the scoring, while Alejandro Garnacho netted twice to secure the win. The result sees United climb to sixth in the standings, with 38 points from 23 games, although they remain 13 points behind league leaders Liverpool, who were trailing 1-0 against Arsenal within the first 15 minutes of their match.
