In his inaugural professional boxing match last year, Francis Ngannou nearly caused an upset against Tyson Fury.
Following this performance, an increasing number of individuals within the boxing community are asserting that Ngannou could present a significant challenge to Anthony Joshua in their upcoming clash scheduled for March.
Initially regarded as a rank outsider in his bout against Fury in October, Ngannou’s status changed after he delivered a powerful left hook in the third round, stunning the formidable ‘Gypsy King.’
This unexpected turn of events prompted a shift in opinion within both Fury and the broader boxing community regarding Ngannou’s potential in the boxing ring.
The most recent individual expressing such sentiments is the former multiple-time light heavyweight champion, Antonio Tarver.
In an interview with Boxing King Media, Tarver remarked that if Joshua’s camp underestimates Ngannou, it could lead to a challenging night for the British boxer.
Tarver, who is now 55, emphasized the significance of the upcoming fight, expressing nervousness due to Ngannou’s natural power.
Referring to the fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk as one for the ages, Tarver highlighted the importance of the AJ and Ngannou bout.
He pointed out AJ’s vulnerability to punches and expressed concern over a fight where Ngannou has everything to win while Joshua has everything to lose.
Tarver acknowledged Ngannou as a phenomenon in boxing, a rare athlete that only comes along once in a lifetime.
Frank Warren, Fury’s promoter, initially discounted Ngannou’s chances in October. However, he too has revised his stance as the fight with Anthony Joshua approaches.
Reflecting on Joshua’s previous match against Wallin, Warren acknowledged Joshua’s status as a big favorite but cautioned that Ngannou’s knockout power could lead to a significant upset if Joshua gets caught on the whiskers (chin).
Warren expressed curiosity about Joshua’s approach in the fight, considering Ngannou’s strength lies in getting on the inside, and highlighted instances where Joshua has shown vulnerability in previous bouts.
