The Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins have reached a consensus on a four-year contract, his agent Mike McCartney announced via Twitter on Monday afternoon. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal could potentially reach $180 million, with $100 million guaranteed.
Cousins is anticipated to assume the starting role in Atlanta under new coach Raheem Morris, who expressed dissatisfaction last month with the performances of quarterbacks Taylor Heinicke and Desmond Ridder during the 2023 season, where the Falcons finished with a 7–10 record.
Despite holding the No. 8 pick in the 2024 NFL draft, some speculated that the Falcons might select a quarterback in the first round. However, the team has opted for a veteran option.
The Vikings reportedly engaged in “internal conversations” about extending an offer to Cousins to retain him in Minnesota, as reported by The Athletic’s Dianna Russini on Sunday. Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah confirmed this in a statement on Monday.
“After significant and positive dialogue with Kirk and his representatives, we were unable to reach agreement on a contract that fits the short and long-term visions for both Kirk and the Minnesota Vikings,” the statement read, in part.
Cousins served as the Vikings’ starting quarterback for the past six seasons. However, his 2023 season was cut short when he tore his Achilles in Week 8. Despite the setback, Cousins has documented his recovery journey through videos in the months since. He threw for 2,331 yards and 18 touchdowns in eight games before being sidelined.
Cousins, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, commenced his professional career with Washington, where he spent his first six seasons after being drafted in the fourth round in 2012 out of Michigan State.
