After facing penalties from the NFL for tampering with quarterback Kirk Cousins before signing him, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank acknowledged the team’s responsibility for the violations. Speaking to reporters, Blank admitted that the franchise committed errors during the process of acquiring Cousins.

Blank explained that the NFL informed the Falcons about procedural mistakes they made, despite their efforts to comply with the rules. According to Blank, the organization failed to follow certain necessary steps, which resulted in the tampering allegations. The acknowledgment came after the NFL conducted a thorough investigation into the matter.

The penalties imposed on the Falcons included a $250,000 fine for the team, a $50,000 fine for general manager Terry Fontenot, and the forfeiture of a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft. Blank stated that the team cooperated fully with the NFL during the investigation and accepted the findings, recognizing the deficiencies in their handling of the situation with Cousins.

Cousins, who signed a four-year, $180 million contract with the Falcons at the start of the new league year in March, was found to be part of the tampering case, along with wide receiver Darnell Mooney and tight end Charlie Werner. Blank emphasized that the team has taken steps to address and rectify the issues internally to prevent future occurrences of similar violations.

Looking ahead, the Falcons are optimistic that Cousins’ addition will propel the team back into playoff contention. With Cousins’ leadership, the team aims to capitalize on its offensive talent, including standout players like running back Bijan Robinson, receiver Drake London, and tight end Kyle Pitts. The franchise is committed to ensuring compliance with NFL regulations moving forward.
