Olympic champions Alistair and Jonny Brownlee have introduced a new triathlon in their hometown of Leeds, set to take place in 2025. The Brownlee Foundation, established after their success at the London 2012 Olympics, has played a key role in making Leeds and Yorkshire a hub for triathlon.
While the city previously hosted the World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) event, that ended in 2022 due to financial constraints. Now, the Brownlee Foundation’s mass participation arm, TBF Events, has stepped in to launch the Leeds Triathlon, which will be held at Roundhay Park, a venue familiar to many triathletes.
Leeds Triathlon Promotes Grassroots Participation and Welcomes Athletes of All Levels
Scheduled for August 3, the Leeds Triathlon will serve a dual purpose: providing an exceptional race experience and supporting grassroots triathlon. Like other TBF Events races, including the Helvellyn and Ripon Triathlons, all proceeds will go to the Brownlee Foundation. The foundation has already introduced over 66,000 children to triathlon through its free mini triathlons.
Brownlee Brothers Launch Leeds Triathlon to Inspire Next Generation of AthletesJonny Brownlee emphasized the event’s role in inspiring young athletes, saying, “Whether they continue in triathlon or simply find joy in swimming, cycling, or running, we want them to know that being active is for everyone.” Alistair added that participating in the Leeds Triathlon allows athletes to directly contribute to the next generation of triathletes.
Leeds has been a breeding ground for Olympic triathletes, and 2025 will be a big year for the sport in the city, with IRONMAN Leeds also debuting in July. Unlike IRONMAN, the Leeds Triathlon will focus on shorter distances, making it ideal for beginners.
Participants can choose between Sprint and Super Sprint distances or opt for the aquabike (swim and bike) category. A relay option is also available, allowing teams of three to share the challenge. Jonny Brownlee highlighted the benefits of this format, stating, “The relay is a fantastic way for people to experience triathlon, even if they’re unsure about one of the disciplines.”
Scenic Course, Festival Atmosphere, and Community Celebration in Leeds Triathlon 2025
The race will feature a picturesque course starting with a swim in Waterloo Lake, followed by a bike ride on closed roads around Roundhay Park, and a run through the park, finishing in front of the Mansion House.
Beyond the race, the event will offer a festival-like atmosphere with live entertainment, food stalls, an expo village, and family-friendly activities to engage both athletes and spectators. Jonny Brownlee expressed his hopes for the event to become a citywide celebration, similar to other iconic triathlon locations, welcoming both participants and visitors to Leeds.
The Brownlee brothers are no strangers to organizing successful triathlon events, having already established the Ripon and Helvellyn Triathlons, which raised £15,000 for the Brownlee Foundation in 2024.
Their commitment to growing the sport at all levels continues with the Leeds Triathlon, ensuring accessibility for newcomers while maintaining a competitive edge for experienced racers. With strong community support and a meaningful cause behind it, the event is set to become a highlight of the UK triathlon calendar.
