As the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) kicks off this week, Team USA is looking to build on recent international successes and bring home a gold medal. The excitement surrounding the tournament has been fueled in part by the thrilling victories of the U.S. men’s and women’s hockey teams at the Milan Cortina Games last month. Both teams defeated Canada in overtime, with Jack Hughes and Megyn Keller delivering decisive goals, generating widespread excitement that has now reached the baseball squad.
Team USA captain Aaron Judge, the three-time MVP of the New York Yankees, spoke on The Pat McAfee Show, highlighting how the hockey performances energized his teammates. Judge said that the players shared clips of Hughes’ goal in a group chat, which helped spark enthusiasm and created momentum for the WBC. “It’s kinda cool that it’s going to snowball into this,” Judge said, noting that representing the red, white, and blue is an opportunity to emulate the success of the Olympic teams.

Aaron Judge and Bryce Harper Lead Team USA’s WBC Quest for Gold Medal Glory
Judge emphasized the significance of the moment, noting the chance for a “special run” and expressing hope that the two weeks away from his MLB duties will be worthwhile. Team USA is particularly motivated after finishing as runners-up to Japan in the 2023 WBC, and Judge’s leadership is central to the squad’s goal of redemption.
Teammate Bryce Harper echoed Judge’s sentiments, underscoring the pride and responsibility of wearing the U.S. uniform. Harper, who had previously been unable to compete in the 2023 WBC due to Tommy John surgery, emphasized the collective spirit of the team, noting that the competition represents not just individuals but the broader country. “Every single day we come out here, it’s for the greater good of America,” Harper said, adding that the experience of hearing the national anthem and representing the U.S. is unparalleled.
Team USA will begin its WBC journey against Brazil on March 6 at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas. With leaders like Judge and Harper, a strong sense of camaraderie, and inspiration from recent Olympic triumphs, the team aims to capture gold and continue the United States’ string of international sports achievements.
